I was wondering how I would attach a pistol grip--
This explains it !  You need to have the insert for the finger lever loop.

Hi Webb !!!

Great posting on a fine looking Rifle !!!  However, I am somewhat amazed at the checkering on the grip lever as t thought it could have been better !!!

Halp's photo's have alway's impressed me and I know they have provided us with valuable information and detail, perhaps too good ...   Please keep up the good work on your quest on the Doctor and his foresight for a better Rifle !!!

Hi Ed -- Thanks for your observation and in-put of the Maynard pistol grip.  Now that you mention it, I agree with you and think the checkering on the grip is a little too "beefy"  and could have been done a bit finer for my taste.

John Bly will know if the wood pistol grip was factory made, or alternatively, the work of someone after delivery of the rifle.

That particular one is probably the original one with the rifle. With knowing the owner and the history and the condition of the gun I would bet money on it.

Checkering on 19th century American guns was generally left with flat tops and not pointed up like it is done now. Unless it was on a highly ornate gun it was mostly utilitarian. This was intended to be a working gun.
