Fillers scare me ever since I read about ringing chambers with some dense type fillers. I've never used fillers anyway, but since it seems my good results without fillers and Unique are still questionable, I better just keep my mouth shut now. I obviously am mistaken about liking Unique without fillers.

On measuring Unique.  Adjustable measures don't throw it well even a Harrell's.

Get one of the little Bonanza fixed rotor pistol measures. They throw it near perfect. Don't think they make them anymore but you see them on EBay No doubt other brands same design work as well.

It's starting to show up, I bought a 8 lb jug two weeks ago. Good thing, my 4 lb paper can marked 1997 was about empty.   I did use up a quite a few 1 pounders of the "new" Unique between the two.

Interesting going back to the old after switching to the new formula that was supposed to be so much better.  No difference none at all.

Now to open up that 8 pounder

One of the few sensible things I've done in recent years was to buy two 8 pounders of Unique before the Presidential Difficulties arose.  I figured that I can make any gun I have run with Unique well enough to get by.  The only problem I've had with it is that I sometimes get leading when using wheel weight bullets.

Add a bit of tin and antimony and size them bigger?

Tin and antimony are expensive and hard to come by so I just put up with the minor leading.  For higher velocity or extended target shooting I go to a different powder or alloy, or use a paper patch bullet.

Today, I came across a letter from Hodgdon a few years ago...They advised not using TrailBoss in the big nitro express cases...even though they were annealed because of the greater thickness of the brass... the pressure is not there to obturate case walls against chamber & the result is high back thrust against breech.
Wouldn't this also be true of any fast burning pistol/shotgun powders such as Unique?  Is this a valid concern?  Thanks!

I would say yes, valid. From perspective of my limited experience i can say that annealing case necks and mouths and sizing cases minimally  (neck only) would solve most of this issue. I have annealed cases that shoot very cleanly, no soot is found on the necks.I have fired cases before annealing and they did show signs of soot on the necks. The largest case i ever loaded with Unique is the 45-70. Your 3 1/3" is quite a bit larger. That is a strong rifle you have, after all. I would anneal cases and i would develop a load carefully.
I have tried Red Dot in the 30-06 and the .338 Federal and they did show soot on necks. After annealing, cases stayed clean. 12 grains of Red Dot in the 30-06 is an awfully small charge in a long case. Still, rifle shot just fine and accurately.

Westerner..could you please elaborate as to why the faster pistol powders such as Unique would not be a concern?  Thanks!...These Hornady .450.400 3 1/4" cases look to have been factory annealed down to shoulder.

I spoke to a technical advisor at Alliant today.  Ever since they went to the Piezo Electric pressure testing..all recommendations for reduced riflke loads using Unique were dropped.  What about all the low pressure loads for the .45-70 & .45-90 using this powder and cast in the older Lyman reload books?  This doesn't cancel out these older safe loads?  What are your thoughts?  Thanks!
