405 Winchester and 40-70 SS

Am I correct in thinking that the 405 Win. round is virtually the same as the 40-70 SS apart from being a tad longer case. I see that some use cut down 405 cases for their 40-70's. So if Shiloh say it is ok to shoot nitro in their 405's, it should be safe to use nitro in a 40-70SS. Or have I missed something?
Cheers,

My wife shoots a '75 Sharps made by C.Sharps in BPCR Silhouette. It is chambered in .40-70 SS. The brass used is made from Hornady .405 Winchester Brass. We have never used smokeless powder in that rifle. I personally would check with the manufacture of your rifle about shooting smokeless loads as if they were .405 Winchester Ammo!
If it's an Old Original Rifle in .40-70 SS....It would be a Black Powder Rifle..I believe.....

I shoot smokeless in my Hepburn all the time. It came to me as a .40-70SS, but the barrel was chopped to 22". I had John Taylor lengthen the barrel back to 30", and reline it to .40-70SS. John asked what brass I would be using to make my .40-70SS cartridges, and I told him .405 Win. So he chambered it to accept the .405 cases, but shorter to .40-70SS length, so it wont accept a factory .405 cartridge.
It shoots better than I can hold, and I've tried it with everything from 300 grain to 425 grain cast lead; all with smokeless powder.

Thanks for your replys. It is not original it's a Shiloh with a 34" heavy weight barrel. I use black and am fine with that but thought it would be good to pick up a box of nitro loaded rounds, my rifle and a target to shoot at and leave all my bp clobber at home. My nearest range is 27 miles with a max. of 100 yards. When I shoot at Bisley, that can be up to 1000 yards plus. Mostly 200 and 600. I guess I am worrying too much about the nitro thing, it's just that my rifle cost an arm and a leg to get it into the UK, almost the cost of a basic Shiloh!

Chris - you might want to get on the Shiloh Sharps forum and ask there or ask Shiloh directly. Their chambers are often a bit different than others. They will be happy to help.

I had to thin the 405 Rims on my lathe for the Highwall Laudensauk Schuetzen Rifle I had in that chambering when using the new Hornady brass.

I can already tell you what Shiloh will say. They feel that all their guns should be shot with black powder.
