How do you take a barrel band off ?
Just wondering if I can do this myself without a big journey to the gunsmith.
Regards.

Hello Nero,
It depends on how the barrel bands are fitted, some have a screw on the underside which you loosen, others may have a pin through the barrel band and the stock, yet others may be held in location by spring loaded 'wings' inletted into the stock. A close up picture would be appreciated so you could be better advised. Wink

Are you asking about a barrel band that goes around the forend and barrel, or one that is around the barrel ?  the former as mentioned are usually fastened mechanically with pins screws or a spring clip.   the latter are usually soldered to the barrel though some may be simply 'shrink-fit", depending ton the barrel configuration.

The band goes around the barrel for a sling and to my way of thinking not delicate enough for this rifle and too near the muzzle.

Nero,
As I said earlier a picture would help. What is the make of the rifle and what model? Barrel bands with a sling mounting are made often with a smaller hole in the band so that when they are being fitted the gunsmith can remove what metal needs to be removed to get a close fit on the barrel.
Perhaps it was fitted by a previous owner who didn't have the necessary tooling to remove surplus metal to get the band in the correct position or perhaps wasn't bothered. As to how it was secured, well if the band is unbroken (solid) it could be soldered, silver soldered and even epoxied in place these days or may even have been shrunk on. Undecided  It would be difficult to tell for someone who isn't a gunsmith, and it may even deter a gunsmith in some cases. As I said pictures (close up's) may help.

Hi Harry, thanks for taking the trouble for two replies.
I had hoped the consensus of replies would have been to apply a little heat to it and the solder would melt and the barrel band would come loose and fall off the end of the barrel.
I reckon I will take it over to the gunsmith next week, as if you don't know what you are doing to leave it to the experts.
Trouble is he's getting on a bit like me and takes ages for the simplest of jobs.
I do realize it will have to be re-blued again but I thought to get it off and clean it up before taking it over to him for re-bluing.
Regards.
