"Torched" cased receivers ??

Here is a picture of my 44 1/2 Stevens. I believe the fellow I bought it from said it was cased by CPA.
It has a bit of that "torched" look....What say you?

Hello RoyB,
In my humble opinion CPA never had that rifle for CC hardening. It does look like a torch job to me. That sort of work doesn't harden the metal at all. I'd suggest you send a Picture to CPA and ask for an opinion. Cyanide dip CC hardening provides long unbroken lines of mixed colours, not broken lines of colours like that.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Harry

Harry, not the bearer of bad news. I suspected this from the start. Still a wonderful rifle and shoots like the dickens. Especially with the 219 Zipper barrel. And for the price I paid, I'm more than pleased.

I'm going to send a picture to Gail to see what she says.

Thanks

Roy,
I hope I'm in error but I do doubt it, but it is a sensible thing to do sending a picture to Gail.
Usually in actions that are torched the person doing it avoids sharp corners so as not to possibly melt the metal, whereas a cyanide dipped item the band continues over the corners without a break.

Colour Case Hardening in not inexpensive and top notch workmen can get up to $400 per action, lever and breech block. For a torch job probably $10-15. A reputable gunsmith wouldn't do a torch job, ever. It would be worthwhile having it done correctly by CPA, I promise you it will look a lot better.

Harry.

Roy, I agree with Harry. But just to be sure when you contact CPA send them the Serial Number. I would be surprised if Gail and Paul did not keep records of work performed and circumstance. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

I think BATF requires FFL gunsmiths to keep a record of the serial numbers.

Well it doesn't look like CPA colors, but it doesn't look like torch cased colors I've seen either. Most guns I've seen with torched case colors look very vague, and not the sharp edges between colors that gun exhibits. I'd be interested in knowing how (or if) the colors were done with a torch on that gun?

Find a place where it wont show and test to see if its really hard.  File or center punch.

I think that it is CPA work.  I had an early CPA that looked very similar to that about 15 years ago.

It really does not look like torch work to me at all.

It does not look like the typical torch job. Another way to tell is, if possible, to dismantle and inspect the inside of the action or areas such as the underside of the tangs. Color case will show there, not as brightly as on polished areas, but will be evident. Torch or false chemical will not appear.

I'd also guess that it's not torched. Interesting. I'd guess the interior case colors are plainer. That may be pack hardened to resemble cyanide colors on the exterior. Maybe the CPA folks will have an idea about it. Thanks for showing it.

I sent Gail an email. We'll see what she says. If this action is "torched" , I'd sure like to know how to do it as I think it looks pretty nice....Different from other cased receivers I have, but nice anyways.

Over the last forty years have spent many hundreds of hours using a oxyacetylene torch. I don't see how the pattern on the rifle in question could be done with a torch. Not saying there's not a way.

Looks like the old Cyanide hardening pattern.

Roy,  Would bet your rifle is casehardened. My understanding is cyanide case coloring is done with a dip, pause method, dip a little deeper, pause and so on. The sort of regular pattern is done with a mechanical device that controls the dip and pause. if controlled by hand, you would get the more irregular pattern seen on your rifle.
