lyman front lock ring [PDF loaded]

As some of you know I took on the challenge of making front lock rings for some Lyman STS scopes. Quite a learning experience. One thing I did come to find out is that apparently they didn't make all their scopes the same. Seems that there are 2 different size Objectives on them. One about 1.450 or so and another about 1.6. For those interested I will be putting up a PDF on this subject in a day or 2 for those interested in how I made these lock rings.

Would be interested in seeing how you did it. Those little rings are a pain.

Thank you Chuck, now that I have, I think, everything figured out, they are not all that bad, just as long as you can set your lathe up to cut 48 threads to the inch. I will be working on the pdf Monday after another long session with the snow blower.

Here is the PDF hope you enjoy it. I had to make the pics a little smaller than I wanted to get it to fit, but it just fits now.

Thanks for sharing that Sam. I got one of the rings and your work is amazing. It fits like a glove.

Take care,
Ted

Here is a picture of the one Sam made for me.  It is the one with the flange in the middle.  Amazing work.

Some good information here for those who might want to try this on their manual lathes.  Some searching on the internet might reveal sources of this material with thinner walls and less machining.  (6061-T6 an excellent choice for this purpose)

The two different diameters on the objective are likely the difference between Target Spot, long gone and Super Target Spot, only gone for a few decades..

Hello,

It is possible you are looking at a Target Spot and also a Super Target Spot, which came later.  At this time, I  am unable to provide additional details.  I also know for at least a period, some of the older Target Spots were upgraded to Super Target Spots at the CT factory, don't know how long this went on either.
