Good power for all-around bench rest scope

Looking for a Lyman Supertargetspot, Unertl or Redfield 3200 scope for my Ruger, and am wondering if a mid-range power would be better for 100-200 yard shooting, considering the length of my barrel and mirage on warm days.  How about 20x?

20X is my favorite power for all around shooting. You can get by with 15X and 12 - 15X is good for OH.

25X and up is great for just BR.

20X to 24X are ideal for mirage when shooting benchrest.

I have a 24X a 32X and a 36X but I always go to the 24X for better visibility with mirage conditions regardless of distance I am shooting and regardless of caliber.

Colleen Pipke on the other hand uses a 36X for her offhand shooting (and we cannot keep up to her).

Yes, but, Colleen could win OH with just a 4X Weaver with the parallax messed up Smiley

As I see it; Little holes are much harder to see than larger ones, though a dark "grease ring" around the hole can create variations;  and of course black/red targets can make a huge diff.     (I've never shot on a BR 'group size" target---only shot for score)

I have no problems seeing 38/40/45 etc @ 200 with 10-12 power. With 32/8.15/7.5 I like a little more 12-15 up to 20.    Shooting 22s I want all the glass I can afford.    that assuming equal clarity and conditions.      other vision may vary

A good BR shooter told me years ago, if they made a good 85 power scope, I'd have one-- in theory, if it appears larger it's easier to hit.  Ledball

I have 3 of those delightful old Redfields, 20s and 24s,  2 of the long ones (one needs repairs to the clicks and is in semi-retirement until I can find a repairman for it) and one of the short ones.
I use them a lot on my ASSRA non-traditional-class rifles.   One pretty much permanently "lives" on my Durren/Ruger#1 22rf 200 yd bench rifle.   The short one is on a CCJohnson custom BSA 22rf from the late 30's.  They are more than adequate if clean and in good shape and the long one look a lot better to 'traditional' eyes than the more modern short scope--at least in the eyes of this beholder

Considering the scarcity and price of the 25 power STS, maybe a 20x is preferable until I get some experience.  Now to find one in condition commensurate with my rifle.
