MH  you are really Fecked now Grin

there is a youtube video that gives a step-by step on crosshair replacement.  I think I saved it because I have a suer target spot with cross hares that are at least a Moa thick.   If I find it I'll post the link for you.  also one of the guys in the For sale section sells the "proper" tungsten wired to do a repair.  there were a couple specialty houses that did noting but wire replacement and one did crosshair & dot work  but I think they are shut down.
Maybe someone else knows or a reliable service that does not have a year or more backlog.

That's a very good tutorial but, Feckers use screws to hold the X hairs.

Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy on that "250"

Some hairs are soldered some are glued some are wound around screws---trick is to make sure they are wound the right way so the screw draws them down and pulls them tight.  critical thing is---or so I've been told as to have good high contrast lighting the wire is DAMN hard to see and a magnifying lens either a head set or some sort of clamp-on.     I bought a clamp on flex-shaft work light with a fluorescent ring lamp (to reduce shadows) that has a magnifying lens in the center.  I have not gotten around to the scope project yet---maybe on a few weeks; but I have used it for other delicate work and I really like it

My Unertl Small Game scope has screws.  I replaced the crooked way to fine to be seen ones that were there when I got it with dog hair.  My first attempt was file except i used the largest hair I had.  Too thick.  I replaced those today with the thinnest ones and it came out perfect.  I taped one end to the barrel and wound around the screws holding the other with my fingers.  Definitely needs good light and magnification.

forty two years ago I had and have a Malcolm scope on a Stevens .22 rifle. crosshairs broken so I took two hairs from our three month old daughters head [ouch]  and glued them it. Still there and working. About a five power glass. And BE SURE to tell the wife what you are doing. Shocked

Here's the little wooden jig I made to position new crosshair in an antique Cummins scope I acquired a while ago.

Holes were all drilled in a milling machine to get the alignment dead on.  With care it could be done on a drill press.   The two small hole for the pins were offset 1/2 the diameter so the hair would pass thru the center of the cell.

Used button thread for the photo.  The actual hair is .0015 tungsten wire.   This scope simply cements them in place.  I used Duco.

I bought the tungsten wire. I thought about using hair or stripped-to-a-single-thread unwaxed dental floss; but decided against it.  The old scopes are usually not humidity sealed and I got to thinking that the natural fibres might shift a little with humidity changes. It might to be that much but I can't afford to allow any avoidable errors,  besides the wire is really a pretty cheap investment.

I just bought fine tungsten wire from Dan Stangarone.  He has both 0.0005" diameter and 0.0015" diameter.  His contact information is in another thread, or maybe texasmac's link.  I haven't gotten around to replacing the wire in my Unertl yet.  It has screws.

I have .001 tungsten wire that is for sale. The scope power determines how fine a wire. The higher the power the thinner you want. JMO

This is my low-tech crosshair setup, but it does work. Tungsten wire doesn't stretch well, so it's difficult to use the watch screws, every time I tightened the screws the wire broke, so I had to use superglue. I applied the superglue with the tip of a pencil. I used a bright light and Optivisors.  Tongue

I gave up trying to use the .0005 tungsten wire.

Even with new glasses I could not see the wire (to work with it).
Had to go to the thicker wire to see what I was operating on.

This is my rather crude but, effective X-hair installer.

It's made of 1/4" thick plastic with two dollar store clips screwed on to it. I cut one side with a 1/16 friction, cut of blade so, when you clip the first side, you can pull the wire straight across to clip it in the other.

When it lays on the cell, it adds tension to tighten the wire and I then super glue it.
