Thanks all.  Quite an education on delrin rods.  My Ruger is a 32-40.  Guess I will talk to a local smith about getting one turned for jags and brushes.  I'm not happy with the "from the muzzle" approach.

I'm not sure how feasible it would be to make a Delrin rod for a .32.  The smallest diameter rod I have ever made is 5/16", and that might be too tight in a .32.  I've never tried it, but I wonder if pushing 1/4" Delrin would be a bit like cooked spaghetti.

You could do what I do with my 30-30.  I pull a patch through the breech with a piece of weed whacker line as described.  For more in depth cleaning, I use a .22 rod through the muzzle and a bore guide I made that protects the muzzle. You still have to start the jag and patch, but it seems to go OK if you are careful.

What case that one can drill out would make a handy muzzle guide for the .321 bore?  A .22 Dewey rod sorta works from the breech but is a pain and not something I want to do alot of.

A fired case drilled out is a traditional bore guide of sorts, but I don't like the brass case scraping a coated rod like a Dewey.  My bore guide is fairly simple, a combination of brass and Delrin.  It doesn't make cleaning from the muzzle a snap, but it does protect both the muzzle and the rod from contact, once the patch is past the muzzle.  The guide has a brass stub about 1/4" long that fits into the muzzle and guides the rod.

Come to think of it, Dewey makes a brass muzzle guide along the same lines, or at least they used to.  You could probably use a .30 for your rifle.

Yes, Dewey does still make a brass .30 muzzle guide..complete with rubber O-Ring for muzzle protection.  I use one on my .32-20 Colt Bisley..Brownells/Sinclair sells them.

1/4 inch Delrin works fine in a 32/40.  Limp as a piece of spaghetti gets in the bore its supported and pushes a patch just like a stiff rod. Big advantage is the bore can be wiped from the breech with out reversing the rifle or coming out of position. Most matches muzzles other than down range or verticals in a rack are not allowed.

Not what you would want to scrub with a brush, oiled patch is all my barrels need.

My CPA Schuetzen has a high comb stock stiff rod won't work. I can remove the barrel and clean, it's not necessary.

Some years back there was a lot of discussion over on the big benchrest site in the 22rf section about barrel cleaning and rods.   The 22rf BR guys are over-the-top fanatics Shocked---at least out to 50 yards or so Wink.  (I kind of gave up on them when I found little that applied to 100 and 200 yard accuracy)

But, they change barrels constantly, the min. they think there might be a bit of wear.  So bore wear caused by cleaning is a real hot topic.
They were pretty uniformly down on the coated rods,, brass rods or plastic rods; Any material might possibly pick up any primer grit, embed it in the surface like a lap, and cause premature wear.  Their solution is a surface hardened one-piece spring steel rod precision-ground to bore dimensions so it can't flex or pick up primer grit.
There are a couple guys in their "specialty support group" who custom make rods for them.  I did buy a long rod that works in "our" rifles and a shorter non-rotating one for chamber and throat cleaning.

Agree with Boats. Use a 1/4" Delrin rod with a sort of universal cone shaped bore protector for most everything from 32-40 to Trapdoors. Just change jag. Noticing a little wear on the bluing above the latch recess on the Trapdoor, so need to keep the rod clean.

I also have available 5/16"-x 8-32 female both ends with rod guide- 35 cal up. These work esp well with
my flex jag adaptor for TDs and Martinis for breech
cleaning or wiping.
and 3/8" delrin 8-32 female if you like something
stiffer for 40 cal up.

If bore wear is a concern all you have to do is wipe the Delrin with a rag between passes. My Douglas barrels used with mild loads 1/25 alloy no antimony and good lubricant never need more than a few patches to come clean.   Take a lifetime to harm a quality barrel with a rod at that rate.
