is this a real remington sight?  Trying to learn  what to look for.  the  sights in "old  gunsights..." look similar  but not exact.    Off  enough to make me wonder.
Don't think it's the right dovetail size.

I believe this is the Winchester Windgage Globe Sight No. 69B which was furnished with or without the spirit level.
Value posted as $300-$500 in Nick Stroebel: Old Gunsights & Rifle Scopes.

Agree with Schuetzendave's call.
From the pictures, it doesn't look like the base portion of the windage sight is tall enough to match the factory Remington sight, and the picture that shows the underside of the sight makes me think the dovetail was later cut to a smaller size (reduced from the standard Winchester 3/8" dovetail width).
Your eyes may tell you something differently.

From Stroebels book, the Remington doesn't look like it has those "ears".  It looks close, but not quite right.

You might ask those specific questions of the seller. He has good feedback so is likely interested in getting it right or may have additional info to share.

Since it's a 5/16 dovetail sight, I'm not sure Winchester ever built a gun with that dovetail size? If it's a Winchester, then Winchester must have made it for other maker's guns.

I have a Winchester rifle with the # 69 front sight and it looks identical except mine the adjusting screw is checkered instead of the straight knurl as in the photo

Looks like a 1980s-vintage Mike Stevens sight made on the Ballard pattern with custom 5/16" dovetail for Maynards. Mass. Arms often used 3/8" Ballard sights shimmed for 5/16" slots.

Do you have a drawing of the shim used to adapt a 3/8" base to a 5/16" dovetail? Shocked

Embarrassed  My mind must've read 5/8" instead!  Shocked

No drawings...but here is a photo of a shimmed 3/8" Ballard base on a Maynard target rifle with a wider cut:

I've seen a number of original Mass. Arms Maynard higher-grade target rifles fitted with Ballard windgage front sights adapted in this way. (The spirit level wedge is a modern addition made by the late Michael Stevens.) I've been told that Mike would customize the base of his sights to help shooters fit them to odd or off-size dovetail cuts.

EDIT:
I have a difficult time telling the difference between some of the various windgage sights...so the one in the ad may be a Winchester or a late Remington repro. by Mr. Stevens...? The "88" serial # is another giveaway, as he numbered his sights and usually stamped an "S" somewhere. Since the base has been filed down a bit...that's probably where it was.

You can make your own drawing of a shim by measuring actual angles depths and widths of your 3/8" sight base dovetail and the Maynard dovetail cut you want to install it in. (BTW...I've read in several authoritative places, such as James Grant, where early Remington and Maynard front sight cuts are ordinarily a nominal 30/64" -- not 5/16".) Making a strip of shim stock doesn't look like a difficult job for someone with access to a mill.

Were Maynards a larger dovetail than the std. 3/8" usually found? The seller's auction would indicate that the Rem. and Maynard were smaller 5/16" dovetails?

HeHe! All these different numbers flying around in that ad and in my senior mind.  Smiley

So far as I know, Maynard target front sight slots (at least on the 1873 and 1882 models) were a nominal 30/64" wide - Early Remington front sights, too.

From Grant's reference and my experience, Maynard rear sight slots were usually less than 3/8" wide at a nominal 18/64". With Maynard rifles there are no hard and fast rules, but I have never seen one of their front sight slots cut that narrow.
