38-40 or 38-50 Rem Brass

Am wondering if trimming to length, annealing and then fire-forming with a load of CoW is a good method for forming 38-50 brass from 30-40 Krag cases? Anyone tried it?

I have had excellent results with stepped, rather than tapered, expanders.   30-30 to 38 cal in one pass, 30-40 to 40 in 2 passes, no anneal required.   Best to trim later, as the cases will shorten when expanded.    About 0.030" steps between short straight sections.  It seems to keep the new necks well centered.

In the past, I have fire formed with CoW, trimmed then annealed.
Just recently procured a tapered expander from Steve Rhoades that he uses to expand from 30-40 to 38-50 in one pass.  He states it takes out the shoulder completely then you run through the 38-50 sizer and you are done.  Steve says no trimming needed which is a big plus.
Steve runs the web site Arizona Sharpshooters and you should be able to contact him there.

Yes. Steve is putting my newest Hepburn together for me. Let me know how the AS expander works once you've tried it. If I get around to trying mine first, I'll let you know. Wink Probably next month. I've got about 2500 bullets to cast before the middle of March.

Glenn,
If you have brass, you'll most likely find out how the AS expander works before me.
I'd like to find 300 rounds of new Remington out of the same lot so will likely have to wait for the annual run of it.

Am up to 150 cases  100 Rem and 50 Win. Want to try both and see which shoots the best before spring for additional. Based on feedback from Steve Durren's info on case prep don't want to get too much of either until I see what chambers well (hopefully, both).

Agree with trying both. Let us know what you find works best. What twist and what barrel?
I'm working up loads for a 1:12 twist Douglas, 8 land 8 groove, stainless.

Glen,

I make my .40-50SS from .30-40 Krag cases with tapered expanders from CH4D. The first one brings it up to .35cal and the second .35 - .40. I run them into a trim die and remove what protrudes with a 32tpi hacksaw. Made over 300 to date without losing any.

Hi-Wall56,

I was unaware Douglas was making 8 groove barrels. Is this something new or something they will do on request.

My original Hepburn started life with me as a .219 Zipper varmint rifle with a heavy, no-name, 26" long round barrel. As it is 1.15" at the receiver and 0.9" at the muzzle, I decided to have it bored/reamed, lapped & cut-rifled into a 14" twist 38cal by Classic Barrel in Prescott, AZ. Should know by summer how good a job they do.

Bob,
Don't think it is anything new. A friend has on in .45 caliber and likes it quite well so thought I would try it in the .38-50 R-H.

Glenn,
I have heard good stuff about Classic Barrel but have not had them do any work for me yet. Let us know how it comes out. A little product review would be appreciated by all.

Thanks, that's good to know. I've had a few Douglas barrels over the years. All were 4 - 6 groove narrow lands. Wonder if the 8 groove is similar, narrow lands wide grooves.
