Which moulds for .22 ?

I'm just starting to get serious with the .22's.  (Hornet, 221 and 223).

Which moulds for plain-base?  (I have several for GC, but need insight for the PB variety.)

[GC in 22 are a pita!]

Here's a 68gr Pope style bullet NOE is making. They make it in both GC and PB. I spoke to them recently and was told they will be doing a run of plan base moulds this spring. I may pick one up myself to try in my .22WCF.

You didn't specify twist, but my Hornet is 1-14"  I had Fred leeth make up nose-pour copy of the old Ideal 22636 in both G.C. & plain-base @ 52grs.  These are not tapered and are for fixed ammo.  If shooting fixed, I found the most improvement in accuracy was to taper 1st. band in a die I made to fit std. lube-sizer to match leade angle.  This band is fully engraved as action closes.  Best of luck, the .22's are fun!

Looks like some good choices.  (correct I did not specify the twist - 4 rifles to start with, expect that I have more than one twist rate, will check soon)

The 22636 (from castpicks: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)) looks similar to the Pope style pictured previously).  I like the concept of the Lovern style.

Took the CZ527, TC Contender (21" bbl), Carl Walther (with double set trigger) and an H&R handi rifle to the range this afternoon.

The Walther did the best (with the lightest loads too) and the CZ was second (with the hottest loads).

I was playing with two vintages of the 225415 - the smallest (oldest) did the best.

This was trip #1 to the range, LOTS more before any conclusions are drawn.

Larry

the CZ & TC are in .223, with the 225415 over 6.5, 7.0 and, 7.5 gr of Green Dot.  from the book, 24" bbl,  6.2 = 1885fps and 9.2 = 2270fps.

The Walther and the H&R in 22 Hornet, with the 225415 over 3.0, 3.5, and 4.0gr of Green Dot.  Where, from the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook, 2.5 gives 1350fps and 4.2 gives 1765.

I shot not quite a hundred rounds, good start on getting to loading cast in .22's.

I repeat, GC's in .22 are a PITA!

How did you make the die?  Pictures?  (I have a lathe and a mill.)

NOE makes a bunch of them.  Swede does a big business  in group buy designs with the "CastBoolit" bunch.  here's a link to their on-line store where he sells over production and production runs of popular designs.

It's easy enough to make a sizing die body and taper it with a throating reamer, if you have a throating reamer that is.

At the time, I was working in a fully equipped tool room. Turned up die  and after H.T., I.D. ground angle.

Understand; thanks.

I think my design will be for use with an arbor press (Schmidt) and made simply on the lathe.
