Westerner,

We have the same problem at our shooting house in cold weather. The warm air inside is meeting the cold air from outside. We just call it mirage. One way that we have been able to just about total do away with it is to hang a thick curtain in the shooting port and have a very small flap the rifle and scope peek through. This usually does the trick. We do this while shooting from the bench rest, not off hand. It works.

I hadn't thought of the mirage aspect.  I was wondering about the effect of the wind pushing on the body of the rifleman and even the rifle itself while shooting offhand outdoors vrs. shooting from indoors through a port.  I'm too sadly familiar with the former condition but have never shot from a "house".

I'm wondering if someone who does both notices a difference in the scores,   or would the cold-weather "window mirage" candle out any advantage in shooter stability? Roll Eyes

Now that is what this sport is all about. Shoot a little, them talk about the shot. No rush, we are retired and enjoying what we do.

Bottom line in accurate rifle shooting is "If you can't see it right you can't hit it." In the case of mirage some times we can learn to read it. Then there is STATIC MIRAGE. That's the toughest of all I believe.

we shot both from a shooting house as well as a regular covered firing line at Davenport. The house does help keep you from feeling like a sail.

Some of the shooters had to contend with snow obscuring the targets. Poor Biggi.

Optical inversion?

Heat waves drifting through the window creates more extensive mirage as the outside temperature gets colder.

The competitive Alberta shooters turn the heat off to shoot and eliminate the mirage.
They always shoot better scores with the heat off than the shooters who like to warm their dispositions.

The "Cold" shooters have a battery warmer to thaw out their shooting finger between shots.

Biggi:

Do you have winter shoots in Germany?
Or is Joe leading you astray?
More snow up here in Alberta.
Caught 40 Rainbow Trout ice fishing so far this winter.
Next year you should come to the Alberta Schuetzen Guild shoot on the second Sunday of December.
It is OK to bring Joe.

We do at times have Mirage issues. Mostly when the stove is being pushed and have lots of heat inside. However I can honestly say that when I have a real good solid let off and call for the most part I get my call. Most really experienced shooters know when they have fired a poor shot even if it kind of looked good, Usually overheld and you keep waiting for it to slow down. Usually some bitching about those. BUT! when I call a poor shot and by some stroke of luck it comes up an X you never hear me complain. I have been shooting this particular match for nearly 50 + years and I still on occasion find myself holding to long, and I know when I am doing it. Just so hard to put it down and start over again. Standard comment is "Better Lucky Sometimes" HTH Regards, FITZ. Smiley
