Are CPA barrels free floated for accuracy , or at least are the forearms glass bed ?

They are not free floated or glass beaded.

Did not know that ! If a barrel is not bedded stress free or free floated accuracy will suffer as barrel cools and heats up, and also while resting the forearm on a rest different areas of the wood forearm will contact the barrel at low and high spots .I may have to think again about ordering a CPA rifle .  Thanks

Most CPA shooters that I see either shoot off the barrel resting on a Protector leather fitted sandbag or use a sled mounted between 2 and 7 inches from the muzzle.  The accuracy lost by not "bedding" is miniscule to the time it takes to learn to read the wind and conditions.  These are inherently accurate rifles depending on the shooters load development and bench management of his rifle. Don't let your forend concerns prevent a purchase.
Just my 2 cents.

You might ask Jerry_H. He recently shot another quarter-bore 250. Think he shoots a CPA.

The top two places in BPCR open sights at Raton this year were won with CPA rifles. They were also well represented in the .22BPCR silhouette matches.

Hi brudford,

There are plenty of CPA owners who would beg to differ. Many on this site have numerous 250's and match honors. I advise you do your research before making a decision.

Glass is good for skinny barrel high velocity rifles. CPA's with # 4 barrels are not going to flex off bags when fired with typical Schuetzen cartridges. I rest mine on the barrel anyhow.

You could have one glassed if you wanted too. CPA will hang the forearm anyway the buyer wants. Beware though complicated forearm set up's have been a source of trouble with many single shot rifles. Main upgrade with Ruger # 1's is tweak the forearm.

Bruford, one look at the targets shot in matches with CPA rifles, particularly by guys like Gerry H, and John L should convince you that these rifles are capable of extreme accuracy.

Do some searching on 250's shot in matches on this forum.

Chris.

Hi Bruford,

Here's a picture of a .32-20 CPA resting on the forearm.  It shoots OK.

Please don't worry about a floated barrel as there are NO floated SS barrels. At least, I've never seen one. Unless the scope is some how mounted ONLY on the frame of the action, it can't be done at least with a scope.

The forearm can be floated but, the only real thing that you have to worry about is to make sure the forearm has a slight gap to the frame. You need to be able to slide a piece of paper between them.

There are other things you can do to make sure the forearm is insolated from the barrel but, if it has a even contact along the barrel channel, it should shoot with most other guys, CPA/Stevens, HW, Borchardt or any of them.

With the large diameter CPA barrels, on the scale of importance determining ones harmonic null point for each of the given loads by caliber is substantially more advantageous to accuracy than a floating or bedded barrel

And if one wants to get picky with the barrel resting on the forearm - just put a rubber O ring under the forearm screw to let the barrel "float"

Very interesting topic.  I have been thinking of glass bedding my bench rest forearm on my 32-40.  I've just about finished the sanding and oiling.  Maybe I should first see how it fits to the barrel using some blacking.  Any thoughts?

I have glass bedded a .218 Bee, .32-40, .40-60 Maynard, .40-65 WCF, and .45-70 WCF half octagon and round CPA barrels.

The bedded barrels shot extremely well.

I left a space between the end of the forearm and the receiver wall when I glass bedded the forearms.

Bedded forearms will not shift  and cause different vibrations between shots. Most people have no problems shooting CPAs without bedding the forearm, however you can fine tune her by bedding the forearm.
