#3 Remington Hepburn - Smokeless Powder???

I have the opportunity to add to my collection of single shot rifles with a #3 Remington Hepburn in 45-70. Original action.

Although I usually shoot Black Powder in these vintage rifles, would this action handle a mild load of smokeless from time to time?

Anything I need to be aware of when purchasing a Hepburn?

You'll want another one.

I just found this:

In 1893, recognizing the potential
popularity of the new high-pressure
smokeless cartridges then appearing,
Remington announced a new version of
the Hepburn known as the “No. 3 High
Power Rifle,” with modified breechblock,
smaller firing pin and round barrels of
special Ordnance steel to handle the
likewise new metal jacketed bullets.
Barrel lengths were 26, 28 or 30 inches,
most often chambered for the .30-40 U.S.
(Krag) cartridge, but could also be had on
order in .30-30 and .32 Winchester
Special, .32-40, .38-55 and .38-72
Winchester calibers, being especially
intended for use with smokeless powder
and jacketed bullets.

Indeed. Just bought my 4th one yesterday. Personally, I only shoot BP in rifles from the BP era, including my Hepburns.
