The November/December issue of the SSRJ had pictures of the record targets shot by John Louis, Laurie Gapko and Jerry Hartwig and I just wondered if they were shot of of bags or?

I use a muzzle rest (sled) for my bench shooting. It makes my Pope High Comb stock more manageable off the bench.

Thanks guys! I've been shooting off of a couple of bird seed filled leather bags and I really have trouble holding the gun totally still and was curious of what the "Big Guys' use. When I bought this rifle, CPA 32-40 Schutezen style, two years ago, John L suggested that accuracy comes with practice and following his thoughts I've put 500 or so rounds through this gun and although the groups have shrunk my wiggling around has spoiled , by my standards, quite a few nice groups.
Sooo-next year I'll practice more and help keep Dave Bennett, who is a super nice person, in business!
Best wishes to all of you from the great state of Michigan!

Do you gentlemen use a rear bag?  Do you allow the gun to recoil freely or do you hold the gun tight?

I do use a rear bag the heavier the better I personally like the alligator bags. As to free recoil the stock will make the choice for you. If you have a traditional or perch belly stock then you are going to have to control the recoil. If you have a Bench rest style stock with the bottom of the butt stock is parallel to the bore then free recoil is a good option.

i use the rear bag only to support the rifle during loading/cleaning - it's always removed for shooting.

40_Rod - Alligator Bag?  I did a search but all I found were purses, shoes, etc.

I have shot my record targets with:

Edgewood 2 1/4" Corduba Front Sandbag
Bald Eagle Front Bench Rest with Windage Top - (Cast Iron - Not Aluminum)
Bald Eagle Rear Sandbag

Bags filled with washed beach sand.

I had tried a Gater bag but it was too large and cumbersome and interferred with my bench technique; I went back to the Bald Eagle bag.

How solid are the benches that you shoot your best scores from? That is, concrete, solid heavy wood, or an old rickety bench?  Do you think benches matter?  Bob
