Colleagues: I am the caretaker of a NIB M94 NRA commemorative. Would like to try it at the range, but I am concerned about wear the receiver mystery metal finish. Have been told that paste wax or a slight application of True Oil will preserve it. Myself, I just do not know. I have a Ballard N o.5 Pacific made in Cody that is going on 16+ years old. The rifle has a coating on the color case hardening that has prevented the colors from wear and fading. A Fellow Shooters claims it looks like an application of automobile clear coat. Anyone have any ideas as to what I could do to preserve the finish of the NRA Commemorative?

	Clear baking laquer?

Just how is it that a company could make firearms so right before 1964, and now produce what they do? I'm sure that it was not all John Browning, and that the Bean Counters have a lot to do with it!!!!!! What happened to quality control? Sendaro

the general publics unwillingness to pay for quality is the major cause. fine rifles are still available for a price. art

If it doesn't work, you toss it and buy another one hoping it will work. It's all part of the new world order. George

The surface finish applied to Color Case was known as "Jap Laquer" Now it was common on Winchester products and I think ? Stevens. You can see that their colors hold up well. Providence Tool, Sharps Rifle, and Marlin Ballards did not get that finishing. By the way the info I got said they applied it on the action HOT. So it got baked on. Those that did not get it ended up a Grey color. I once saw a really nice Ballard with glorious colors. I asked the Guy that owned it how come? And he responded that it had been bought and parked in a closet forever. He said it had not been exposed to sunlight at all. He said that was what faded the colors. In today's world the color case procedures have been re-discovered and there is some really nice work being done. I wonder if they are coating the surface as was done in the past. Well, enough for now. Regards, FITZ.

When Colorcase Co. was still in business he used Baking Lacquer on some of his work. I believe Stevens used to Lacquer their actions also. Sunlight will fade Color case colors if gun is stored in sunlight. If you want to save the colors of your rifle store them in a dark place like a safe.

You could give Wyoming Armory a call and ask. Steve Garbe is a good person to talk to and will answer your questions concerning the finish. He was there during the "Cody Ballard" years, so will know.

I have heard that Stevens used lacquer but am not positive. Anyone sure on that? It sure starts to peel and flake like lacquer but could be varnish of some type. Not sure what else it could be in that time frame.

brass musical instruments are also covered with a baked-on lacquer to preserve & protect the highly polished finish. I live half an hour or so from Elkhart IN and long before it was famous for RVs and before Nashville it was "music city" producing the vast majority of brass-band instruments in North America. The factories there bought various "baking lacquers" by the railroad tank-car. You might look into "musical instrument repair supplies" on a data search site or contact a brass instrument repairman. Practically any sizable high school band teacher can connect you with a horn repairman.

Brownell's lists Baking Lacquer. I wonder how different it is from airplane dope.

How about a linger polyurethane with a uv shield. I think Allgrip makes a clear used in the marine industry. A co called Sterling makes a two part urethane that is hard as rock and absolutely beautiful. I
