I do believe that most Ballard 40 calibers are .410. My 40/63 is .410 and 20 twist. I think the 20 twist is also standard for the Ballards.

I always thought the problem was that people looked at Cartridges of the World and found out the bullet diameter and assumed that was the groove diameter of the rifles. That is not true in black powder days especially with cartridges which started out as paper patched.

That's a good shooting rifle Bob. Have knocked down nine turkeys with it. Lots of rams and pigs. At three pounds and a ten pound trigger, not many chickens fell.
.410 groove diameter and 20 inch twist.  Here tell that twist won't work. Has to be a 16 twist.  Roll Eyes  Grin Have retired it from silhouettes. Now we run coons with it.

In my 40-63/40-70 a .408 bullet just barely engraves the rifling and can be pushed through easily with a wood rod. That same loaded in a case will not chamber unless I run it through a 405 win sizing die.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I have 5 Ballards in the .40-63/70 chambering and all are around .410" groove diameter.
Have others in .40 caliber Ballard cartridges, and they too are around .410" also. I think Marlin pretty much stayed with the .410" groove, regardless of whether it was a .40-70 Ballard, .40-65 Ballard, or .40-85/90 Ballard chambering.
