Has anyone ever used a 14" twist barrel for .22 long rifle and if so what were the results?

I've never tried it, but since the standard of 1-16" seems to work well, I never wanted to try it. My concern would be over stabilization, and less accuracy.

16:1 twist is the most common twist used today.

Ron Smith (RKS barrels) has been experimenting with a slower twist and finding 17.2:1 twist may be a bit better.

That is all we need is new improved RKS barrels beating our regular RKS barrels  Smiley   Cry

Bob:

I am getting him to make me one for my CPA Stevens 44 1/2 this winter.

Might have to trade in my Martini MKII with the 16:1 gain twist RKS barrel.

Just cannot shoot that BSA prone stock offhand very well (even though I got a perfect bulls eye in the King target with it at Raton this year - got lucky).

Faster twist is all over the internet but I don't subscribe to the faster is better with cast bullets theory.

Can't prove it and don't want to even try but seems to me if the bullet is stable twisting faster just brings up a whole new set of potential problems with bullet temper lube etc.

Somebody shoots a 14 twist .22 in top level competion does well I may re-think that opinion until then will stick with 16's

John - 16/14 = ~14% faster twist. That's a pretty big step. Nothing I've read about rimfire .22 competition shooting (though I'm not a 'student' of same) has mentioned going to faster twist barrels for better accuracy. I would think that if it were so then Anschutz and the other target rifle makers would be doing so and it would feature prominently in their advertising. At $5-700 for a new barrel, that's a fair amount of funds if it does not turn out to be at least as accurate as a 16" twist.

Isn't that extra-heavy bullet (60 gr as I recall) 22 ammo from Aguila one runs into on occasion designed for special purpose fast twist loads--or so I "have been told".

I have never heard of good results using it in standard twist bullets.

It is one of the few 22 rimfire ammos (along withe 22WRF) that one can still find on local shelves,   even the 22 rf spray and pray guys have learned it wasn't working in their high-cap rim fires.

I see what you mean about it being hard to shoot offhand.  I see a lot of "2" and NO "5" on that target  Grin  Cheesy  Roll Eyes

The reason I was asking was there was a new 22 rimfire Pac-Nor barrel on ebay for sale with a 14" twist. I passed on it because no one thought it was a good idea.

Yah. Left too much room. Someone could have snuck in.
Guess I didn't call the wind right.
But then you have to leave room for improvement.

You did good. Visited Ron Smith in August. Told me that he and Tom Bodnar had run many .22 twist experiments. Said 17 was the best. Also said that the difference from 16 twist was so small as to be almost nill.  How good are you?

      Joe.

John is good enough to have won the AAA .22BPCR open-sight nationals at Raton this past July shooting his original 1882 Maynard with the original 130-odd year-old barrel. I watched as his spotter. Maybe he does need that 17" twist.

They're available. Most likely not made by Ron himself. When I was there Rons grandson Jarod Was making them under grandpas supervision.

For some reason the 1 in 14 twist rings a bell. .22 short or .22 WRF possibly?
