Of interest is this single shot Match Rifle produced by the British firm of Westley Richards and commonly termed a "Monkey Tail" breechloader match rifle.  I believe it to be a 52-Bore.  There is an excellent historical account of the gun available at the web site that follows;

  I have just been advised that representatives from College Hill Armory will be attending the upcoming Gettysburg Gun Show to be held at the Eisenhower Event Center on 25 and 26 October 2014.

They will return to the area again on 21, 22, and 23 November 2014, at the Nation's Gun Show to be held in Chantilly, Virginia.

College Hill Armory, I am told, only deals in antique arms produced prior to 1898 and associated edged weapons and accouterments.

I had a chance to flip the Westley Richards book that you mentioned. While it's not just about their single shots, that book is very well done and worth looking for if the interest is there.

The Westley Richards web site could easily consume a full afternoon for me if I had the leisure of having a free afternoon.

The firm has been in business for 200 years and it's output is of the highest quality found anywhere, bar none.  I though it a bit foolhardy  on my part to open the name of Westley Richards to discussion with this audience, but here we are, the two of us.

I will readily admit to my English heritage and lack of knowledge concerning names such as Winchester and Remington.

Glad you enjoyed the read.

CMM, I have owned 2 WR rifles myself. Got tired of people asking" is that a Ruger no. 1?" I now have a Holland and Holland rook and a 10ga fowler and a 40 cal per. Rook. You are in good company. Later, moodyholler

I own and shoot Westley Richards rifles, even if only the ZAR issue Martini's.  I do like 'em - after all, the complete action was made by Augste Francotte.  Then again, I also own a Geo. Gibbs falling block (Field patent).

Martini Belgian ---

Just wanted to thank you for all the great research work you've done on the Single Shot patents.  I visited your site, but for some reason, I was unable to open the E-mail feature.

Regards,

It was a pleasure making that site - I had the information anyway, so I could just as well post it on my site. Niwadaays, with google patent search not much use in updating it.  Back when I made it, there was no such thing...

David,

Thank you very much for posting that reference, which I had not seen previously.  I am about to leave early being it's Friday and I need to work tomorrow, but I will read and digest the article tonight.

Most appreciated !

Gert,

Back in the mid 1950s, when I first started collecting, W-R monkey tails were not very popular. I now have a number of W-R rifles, but still don't have a monkey tail. I guess old prejudices die hard.
