Have been enjoying my original Hepburn so much that decided I needed another. Picked up this one in .219 Zipper. Will rebarrel in 32-40 or something like that, but not sure which cartridge at the moment. Plenty of wood to work down to proper dimensions to return it to its former glory.

Yeah, I know. Even thinking of selling my Low Wall .22LR and ordering a new .22LR Hepburn from DZ Arms. The price of $3750 is holding me back. But, it is a very nice rifle and has some clever design in it to be a reliable .22LR shooter. DanZ and RandyR shot them at .22BCPR matches at Raton this year and did quite well.

I agree with you guys. Now have two Hepburns also! I took the one pictured in 45-70, I restored it last year, but haven't shot it much because of the recoil. So last spring when I was at Dave Crossno's place I bought one of his .22 liners. It is sweet. I only shoot for fun and now I am having a lot of fun with it. Very accurate too.

That's a very nice looking Hepburn.
My primary thinking on purchasing the "new" Hepburn is to try the DSTs. My 40-65 has a nice (~1.5#) standard trigger, but I wouldn't mind something a bit lighter. It is a very comfortable rifle to shoot and very accurate, though that likely has as much to do with the GM barrel & DT chamber as with the action. But, I've become a fan of the small side lever as opposed to the under-action lever on my High Wall. Just a very slick action. Think I'm going to have to get one of those rimfire liners.

The double set triggers are nice, I haven't put a gauge to mine, but it is certainly less than a pound. Dave Crossno did the work on getting them set right. Not much more than a touch and it fires. I understand now why some of the old schuetzen shooters used to sandpaper their trigger finger to feel the touch.
My other Hepburn is in 32-20 with a single trigger and it probably has about 1 1/2 lb. pull, still very light. I haven't had enough time to shoot it enough to truly know how accurate it is. Hopefully can play with it more this fall and develop different loads.

I'd be somewhat torn between leaving that Hepburn in it's reconfigured old varmint rifle configuration, or making it into a neat schuetzen rifle. So many nice old singles got built into crude varmint rifles, but some were very nicely done, and are a nice representation of that era of single shot shooting.
I have a Hepburn in .45-70 that I built up from an original receiver, Crossno stocks, and a GM barrel. Also another in .40-70SS with factory DST. I'd gladly grab any more I came across whenever I have the funds available! I like old Remingtons, and especially Hepburns!

If someone wants the wood and .219 Zipper barrel I'm sure we can work out a trade for some other wood. If not, I'll likely work it down to a more traditional look. I've got nothing I would shoot with the .219 Zipper. By that, I mean I shoot my rifles in various competitions and that cartridge doesn't fit in anywhere. I'm thinking something along the lines of a 38-50 or 40-60 Win BN that could serve a dual role as both an off-hand rifle and a BR rifle. Am also thinking a 40-70 Rem, which would be historically correct. Would order a reamer that would allow for cut-down 45-90 cases as the starting point. Think it would be better than the 40-70 Sharps BN due to the longer neck, which would make it easier to load.

Spoke to CPA and Gail said they can run that forearm through their 'wood-chipper' and make it into a standard Hepburn forearm to match the shape of my other Hepburn. Have also found someone local who can 'whittle' the stick down a bit to match my current stock. I'm thinking that won't take too much work. Once GM gets that new 14" twist #4 barrel in production I'll get one and chamber in 40-70Rem to make it close to an original. Should only take a year or two.

It seems to always take a year or two. Locating original barrels to mate to a action, or finding the opposite. Getting stocked, checkered, finished, etc. Some of the longer waits is finding the original proper tang sights or spirit level front sight. All in all, it's an enjoyable adventure!

Was looking at the barrel. Is dated 5-1-50 and proof-mark stamped. Started life as a 22K Hornet, but is now a .219 Zipper. Very nicely done, whomever did the work. I'll have to check the twist. No use to me, but am sure someone will want.

Another question. Just noticed that the side of the both the upper tang and lower tang on one of my Hepburns have an 1803 s/n, but the bottom of the lower tang is stamped with a number which is almost 600 higher, at 2392. Which is the actual serial number?

The number on the bottom of the lower tang is the serial number and the numbers on the side are assembly numbers. One of my Hepburns has the serial number and the other one is blank.
This is from Tom Rowes book--Remington's No. 3 Hepburn. " Serial numbers may be found on the lower tang, stamped on the forearms and butt stock, butt plate and under the barrel. Assembly numbers may be observed stamped on the sides of the action's tang, when the butt stock is removed. Very rarely a rifle may be found with no serial numbers at all"

Took the DST out of this Hepburn and installed in my 40-65 BPCR Hepburn after a bit of stone-work and inletting on the stock. The DST works great at ~1# compared to the 2+ pounds of the single trigger it replaced. 40-shot match Saturday (if we don't get rained out) to see how it compares.
