Who's holding the Maynard?

Print Post
I have recently received an old photo album. I believe that the photos were taken after WWII and before 1953. They belonged to a gunsmith and rifleman by the name of William "Bill" Crowther. of Maryland. Seems that he made the rounds visiting manufactures of shooting equipment as well as riflemen, and having his picture take with them. I have ID several of the people & places in the photos and want to see if I can put names to those I have not. I have attached an interesting old photo to this that shows Mr. Crowther on the steps below an old gent who appears to be holding a Maynard target rifle. I can make out a tang sight and a globe front sight. Anyone got an idea who the oldtimer is?

I think it's O.A. Niedner holding his 44-100,Model 14. M.Petrov was the last to own that rifle, there is allot of history in that rifle and photo.

It is A. O. Niedner ... and he is holding his personal Maynard Creedmoor rifle in .44-100. There is an article titled A Maynard Talks by Michael Petrov in the 1997 Gun Digest.

The rifle has a non-Maynard buttplate. When Michael took off the decaying rubber buttplate he found a handwritten note under the buttplate that said, "This rubber butt plate was fitted by A. O. Niedner dowagiac, MI July 1921. This gun was owned by A. E. Leopold on ...town, Penn".

If I remember correctly, this rifle has a second barrel that was fitted by Niedner he used for shooting dragonflies while fishing ... at least that's what Michael told me.

This rifle, along with the others from Michael's collection will be auctioned by Amoskeag in November.

There will also be a second collection from the estate of John Wills. John had an amazing collection of very high quality single-shot target rifles as well as pre-war Colt DA Target revolvers.

... save your pennies fellas. It's going to be an amazing auction!

My guess was also Niedner, but the photos I have seen of him he was a much younger man. I have several more photos that maybe be of interest and some also need help with making an ID of the subject. Is this the proper place to post them and the discutions of their content? Please advise.

                               thanks, Sendaro

That is one extremely informative post pertaining to the unique Maynard target rifle that is being displayed.

So it would be Mr. Sendaro who owns the original of the photograph ?   The 1997 Gun Digest is a definite read for me.  I need to know the entire story behind this very interesting preview.

It would appear that the relevant Amoskeag auction will be No. 104 scheduled for Saturday 22 November, 2014.

Thank you gentlemen, all.

Regards,

/S/

This sounds like a road trip for me. All I have to do is cross the boarder into NH and enjoy the day.

Sure enough, there she be !   Keeping good company with the J.Stevens on the left (our left, her right).

Pop seem to be enjoying a good cigar, and is obviously well fed.

What is Pop's name, if I may be so bold as to ask?

Might we assume it's John Wills, since that's where Michael got it?

I don't know, John. While I can see some simular facial features (chin & nose) and he wore glasses and smoked cigars. I don't think Harvey was ever that chubby.

I have lots of pictures of him in his book "Your's Truly", here are two pictures, one from WW2 and the other from 1948 (holding the target).

The above, mystery picture looks like it's from no later than the forty's.

Neat batch of old photos.   William "Art" Crowther was a long-time casual acquaintance, and quite a photographer.  He was always  sending photos.   Last one was of him and me at a BPCS match shortly before his passing.

Robert Sears and Art were, at the time or Art's passing, the only two living members of the group photo at the "first" benchrest match at Johnstown NY.   Now only Bob is left.

Art's wife, "Darce", also quite a BR shooter.

I think the other person in the photo with Donaldson and Whelen is Hubalek.

Hi Guys, Let me clear a few things up. I personaly knew and photographed Harvey Donaldson. The man near the gun cabnet is not Harvey but A.O. Niedner. That is Harvey in the photo with the woodchuck. In the next photo Harvey Donaldson is holding the target. To the right is Col. Towensend Whelen and the gent on the left is John Unertl. I know because I have the original of that photo taken on the Pine Tree Rifle Club Range in 1948. Harvey is holding a target that just set a new world record in benchrest shooting. It was shot by Sam Clark J. who is kneeling at the far right in the photo. Kneeling from L to R are Joe Rich, Manley Butts, Sam Clark Jr, Standing L to R are Frank Hubbard, John Unertl, Harvey Donaldson, Col. Townsends Whelen, and Clair Taylor. Note that Rich, Butts, and Taylor all hold Taylor & Robins benchrest rifles.Darce Crowther, Bill Crowther's wife won the Donaldson Trophy at the 1951 Annual benchrest matches held at the Pine Tree Rilfe Club of Johnstown NY. When Darce passed a few yeas ago the org Donaldson Match trophy she won was returned the PTRC from where it came and is again awarded to the winner of the annual Donaldson 200 yd score match in September.
Again, is this the right plase to post old photos and the likes of this post? Please advise.                                Sendaro

Thanks for posting the pictures! I love gun history, and shooting history in particular! Some well known names in the world of competitive shooting there!

Me to Val and I thank Sendaro for his clarification. I am going to remove my post so it does not inadvertently lead to any confusion.

Yes, my bad.   It is Unertl rather than Hubalek.
