Exactly what does the Ivory Soap do to/for the lube?

Soaps are a good way to raise the melting point of the lube, if you feel you want to do that.  My favorite schuetzen lube (one of the DELL recipes, q.v.) has a good dose of lithium stearate in it.   For BP, the soap tends to make things a little gummy.

Ivory soap is the emulsifier that allows you to mix/blend oil base or wax ingredients with water base ingredients.

An easier way to raise the lelt point of beeswax lubes is to add small amounts of castor wax.
The lube I am using now I wanted something like SPG but with a higher melt point. What I have now works like it but with a melt point of 220.

As I recall from the lube discussions on the old "shooterstalk.com" website.   Ivory FLAKES were vastly preferred for lube blending over melted bath bars or the liquid.  I don't remember why but there was expert professional soap chemist who added a lot of valuable comment and as I recall it came from him

The Ivory soap flakes or beads were simply PURE soap with no other emulsifiers, diluents, or additives. Charlie Dell found that the "99.9% pure" soap bars would work if shaved or pulverized, but did have a much higher moisture content than the beads, making it much more work to get it into solution. NONE of the liquid "soaps" are true soap- they are detergents.

Not strictly true.   Most potassium soaps are liquids.  It IS true that the "liquid soaps" on the market are not really soaps.

Thanks Chris! I knew they were not suitable substitutes.

It is all well defined in Charlies Book and well worth the money spent. Singleshot is the only one I know of who can provide you with the correct information on Charlies behalf outside of buying the book. He is also the only one who can provide with Charlies Lube formulas in an un altered state as was provided directly from Charlie.

If you want to know about soap in lube, look up the word "saponification."  This is the process by which non-polar and poor molecules can be joined in a more or less homogeneous mixture.  (Yep, Charlie talked to me a bunch too! Wink
