Is 25 Hornet a Dirty Word in Reloading Manuals?

Though I do have data for the caliber, believe it was 5 manuals that I went through looking for 'published' data ... NADA except one - Cartridge Conversions and that was from an author of a article

Purpose for the search: modified the firing pin and a new main spring for the '94 Favorite 25 Stevens "CF"and wanted to reload a box to see how the rifle shoots fitted out with a Pope 200yd rear and a MVA Beach front sight

From all that I've read, the .25 Hornet wasn't a very successful wildcat.

And I'd be very, very leery of shooting that in a Favorite.  For one thing, the .25 Favorite barrel is .250 groove diameter, for the rimfire cartridge.  There never was a centerfire Favorite.

Try using loads for 25-21 Stevens drop 10% and work back up

NOooooo!    Shocked Shocked Shocked    The .25 Hornet has 16.5 grains water case capacity, the .25-21 has 24 grains!   Even at 10% reduction, pressure will be more than double, per a quick run through Quickload.

I would be suprised to see anyone publish loads for a Wildcat of recent creation that could lead to building it in a action of dubious strength. I do know of a M70 winchester that was basicly demolished by a 22K Hornet with a load of I know not what. I had tested the Rifle for the Gunsmith that did the conversion with surplus GI Hornet ammo and it funtioned well with a few split cases which is to be expected when fire forming new brass. When the rifle was damaged it had vented into the bolt and down thru the magazine and blew the floorplate and magazine stuff right out of the Gun. It also split the stock all the way to the forend tip and back to the toe of the Buttstock. Now this will show what can be done with improper loads of some very fast powders. HTH, Regards FITZ. Here's the game plan for the '94 Stevens using 22 Hornet, reformed to 25 Hornet:
* 67gr 25-20 bullet resized to 255, 1:20 (Cerosafe groove 252)
* Load the 25 Stevens RF black powder charge ... 10 to 11gr FFg ... should be in 1100-1150 fps range
* Chronograph the 10 and 11 gr reloads
* Using a down charge of 5gr Unique - match the black powder velocity with a velocity less than 1200

John, I think you're letting yourself in for trouble.   5 grains of Unique with that bullet, and assuming breech seated to keep pressure down, you are still going to get 20,000+ psi pressure (per Quickload), operating on a much larger case head area than the .22 rimfire.  If you insist on this, at least do the "tie-it-to-a-tire" routine.

Don't get me wrong on this.  I'm a dedicated fan of the Stevens 44/Favorite action.  Aside from my one Favorite, I have a half a dozen Model 44s, and just bought another one today.  That load would be fine in a Model 44, but the little Favorite is far weaker.   I'd give even odds that you will damage your Favorite action in the first dozen shots, if not before.

5 gr Unique will be much to high a starting load. I used to have a "Baby" RB (#2 size) in 25/20 Win and 4.5 gr of Unique gave me 1515 fps with a 73 gr (257420 PB) in just a 21" barrel. Your smaller groove size, will raise pressures a even higher. Unique might be a good powder for that application but, don't start above 3 gr (2.5 would be better) and I would hold my velocity to 950 - 1100 fps.

I have a Stevens Model 47 on a 44 action.  The barrel, probably a #3, is marked 25-20.  But it is a .25 rimfire barrel. with a .251 groove diameter and a 17" twist.  It is chambered for .25-20 Stevens Single Shot.  It shoots the lighter bullets OK, but 5.0 grains of Unique blows primers & is way too hot for my Stevens 44 action.

That said, if you find the Wolfe 2-volume paperback on Wildcat Cartridges, the volume where half of it is bound upside down, you will find a couple of articles on the .25 Hornet.  IIRC, with cast bullets.

When I was working up loads for the .25 Stevens RF with the 65 gr. bullet in a Marksman, 1/40 alloy, I was scaling .66 of .32 S&W BP pressure loads and calculated limits as follows: Bullseye - 1.6, Red Dot - 1.8, Green Dot - 1.8, TightGroup - 1.3, 231 - 1.6, Unique - 2.3, Blue Dot - 3.2, 7625 - 2.4, TrailBoss - 1.7. I got good results with Unique - 2.1, TrailBoss - 1.6, Green Dot - 1.6, Blue Dot - 3.1, so the gun was happy with the load and the alloy - didn't take much to be accurate with no signs of pressure (and a feeling of security behind the action) - nowhere near 5 gr. of Unique. The .25 Hornet is close in volume to the .25 Stevens RF, maybe a little larger, so a smidge (between a dash and a pinch) more powder would be OK, but BE CONSERVATIVE!

And I've got a .257" groove barrel that came to me chambered for .25 Stevens RF !   Grin

What was going on back there in Chicopee Falls, anyway?

My 44 in .25 Stevens slugs out to .257-.258. I have no idea why. Anyone have a source for the 67 grain .25 bullets?

25 Hornet for breach seating competition work has won more than its fair share of 25 caliber matches in the hands of Dave Purcell and a few others. I know of no one shooting it with fixed.

I seem to recall the 67 grain weight listed as one of the available weights from the .25 cal Ideal Perfection mould.

Phil - Frank ... I too am consensus and concerned keeping the pressure low in the Favorite.  As I posted:
Quote:
Using a down charge of 5gr Unique

the plan is to start with 1.5grs of Unique over the chronograph

bisaacson - thanks for the down loaded recipes - options with TrailBoss based on the the Unique load comparable to the black powder velocity of 1100 to 1150 for the Stevens 25 rimfire
