Hello uscra112,
I am familiar with that particular article and I also have both copies of the Late Oscar Gaddy's publication as well as much more on Pack Hardening. what i cannot find in the process of cyanide CC hardening described in detail. I've actually done some pack hardening with varying results but never used cyanide. It's almost impossible to get in any volume in the U/K anyway. There are many laws relating to the acquirement of it. Given that is a killer if the fumes are breathed in or a cut comes into contact with it. I have tried machining very large dome headed valves made for steam turbines and the finish just didn't want to know a milling cutter at all, they just snapped off.  Its a damned hard finish.

Good point - the links I found do not say anything about getting colors with the cyanide process.

I posted that homemodelengineering link mostly for his clever way of getting the parts into the quench tank with no exposure to air.  Gotta try that.   Just bought a small kiln to heat treat hammers and triggers and such for my Model 44 projects.  Wouldn't ya know it's too small to take a receiver in a pot like that?

Phil

Hello Phil,

Ah, Murphy's Law strikes again. I bet the next larger size kiln costs a bomb. Roll Eyes
