They're fairlyy common here in Canada, although we can't use them for hunting.  

I've shot both styles and while they are neat looking, the Savage old or modern equivalent (model 42) is a far better gun.  The game getters are flimsy in comparison, for recreational shooting/plinking you have no forestock so get ready to burn yourself.  You should get one if the urge is upon you to have one, but the honeymoon wont last forever.  

As far as discussing it, you will have better luck in the trapper/hunting forums then you will here which panders mostly to target rifles.
