I think you are dead on marlinguy. For one thing they quit taking guns on the train and street cars a long time ago. I just slip mine in a full length case for transport. Also just realized that a case for the gun taken apart would be hard to find today.

I used to collect takedown cases when I had a number of Marlin takedown repeaters. I've still got some, but don't use them. Some are hard cases, but most are nice canvas cases with leather edging. I love the takedown cases, but rarely put my guns in them when I had a lot of takedowns.

I think removing a TD barrel for cleaning after shooting Black Powder loads would make sense as it would make both cleaning and re-oiling the action MUCH easier on a Stevens.
And in modern times BP would not be a constant use choice so would not be done often.

The other TD types may be more of a problem.

Even though they were designed to be taken down, I can not argue with the logic that it will result in excessive wear if done excessively. As a practical matter, when they were new, I doubt that the average hunter/target shooter ever broke the gun down enough times in his lifetime to wear the gun enough to do much damage. As a matter of practice I will continue to keep mine in one piece with the occasional exception.

Please Remember that in the 1880s through the 1910s most people traveled either on foot, horse back, carriage/wagon or Streetcar/train and going from home to Target Range and back again would involve public transportation where the take down capability and compact packing for carry with the other items needed would be of advantage.  I doubt that the Urban Citizenry even then looked favorably upon someone openly carrying a Firearm on Public Transit Systems.

Pre the 'Brady Bunch' of anti's ... in the 60's I used to board a Mohawk D-3 at Newark NJ airport with a a rifle and shotgun in cases.  Took my seat - slid the firearms in front of me and flew to my home town to go hunting.  Did this nearly every couple of weeks during the hunting season - not a word from airport personnel - pilot or the flight attendants
