Volume or weight?

Print Post
Hi all,
Stupid questions...
When talking about blackpowder cartridges such as .50-70, .45-70, .40-70, etc..
Does the "70" designation refer to volume of powder or grains of powder?
And, what is the correllation between volume and weight numbers?
Thanks,
Dave

Broken Arrow:
"Grains" are units of weight.   Some measuring tubes for ML's are marked in units approximating the volume of a corresponding weight of powder.   Powders vary, however, in density, so specifying a volume is not informative.
