SgtDog311,

Let me add my welcome to the Forum.  I would only change the 32-40 specs you have for 4759 Powder.  I have never gone below 13 grains for this powder with bullets from 165-200 grains.  I'm not sure what velocities you would get out of that 11 grain load, but I really don't think they'll be optimal.  I use 13.2 - 13.6 as my standard with 4759 in my high walls and a Ruger #1 I used to have, and even with the weaker early lever gun, I don't believe you will find these to be too hot.

I have a Roller chambered for 32-40. I shoot 170gr FB cast.
The best loads for that rifle are,
13gr IMR4227
13gr 4759
I shoot IMR 4227 as they shoot pretty much the same and IMR 4227 is much cleaner.
I shot some WC820 with similar results 13gr being the best also. Didn't give the WC 820 as much bench time.

Green_Frog & Bullshot,  Thanks!!   You guys make me think I’m right where I want to be.

I’d like to land with the workup ending  as close to 1440fps as I can get.   I read that was Winchester’s original offering so figure it can’t hurt the old rifle.

But I wanted the starting point to be as close as 1250 as possible.

From three manuals and factoring in testing firearms, bullet weight differences, barrel length differences, etc., I’ve adjusted calculations for the IMR 4227: 1238fps for 11gr & 13gr at 1470.   For the SR 4759:   11gr to get 1274fps and 12.5 to push 1442fps.

Those may be low but it’s the best I could do and ‘too high’ was my largest concern.

The slower powders should give me enough room on pressure to allow for a little overage above 1440 -- and if I reach it before the final loads then I’ll just pull some bullets.

Also, I added IMR 4895 to the mix.

With this weather I’ve got 69 loads worked up in four calibers (five powders now for the 32-40 alone) so there are likely several trips and a lot of time at the bench = sure don’t want to waste any on miscalculations way below or above the target range.

Really appreciate the input for that reason.
Best Regards,
SgtDog

Happened on some source-sheets sent with some brass I bought off a fellah.   Those are underlined.    Not trying to burn bandwidth but don’t like to leave a post without follow-up.  Good news is - I’m on the safe side; bad news - may waste some time down in lower velocities.   Think I’ll adjust per recommendations here.

[b]IMR 4227: 11-13gr (1238-1470fps)
– based off Hodgdon book (T/C 23" so added 75fps to calculations).
New Source - Lyman 45th:
12gr 4227 @ 1218
15.4gr 4227 @ 1488
NRA Handloading 1981:
14 Dup 4227 @ 1375 ((175gr bullet)
Note: Lyman 45th suggests  maybe as much as 2 grains.    I wonder how different is IMR 4227 of today than IMR 4227 at time of 45th Ed?

Alliant 2400: 10.4-11.3 (1270-1390fps) – based on past velocities shot from same rifle.
New Source - NRA Handloading 1981:
12.6gr 2400 @ 1440 (175gr bullet)
Note:  Hard to tell since bullet is 10gr heavier – will stick w/original projections since based on previous velocities from this rifle.

IMR 4198: 13.5-15.5 (1275-1455fps) – based off Hodgdon book (T/C 23" so added 75fps) and Lyman 4th Ed (24” barrel – added 50fps)
for 16.5gr @ 1495 through 19gr @ 1721.
New Source -Cartridges of the World, Revised 5th Edition:
165gr bullet:
17gr 4198@1460
Note:  Suggests I could go up as much as 1.5 grains.   No indication from sheet obtained whether Hodgden or IMR.

SR 4759: 11-12.5 (1274-1442fps) – based off Hodgdon book (T/C 23" so added 75fps) and Lyman 4th Ed (24” barrel –subtracted 50fps)
for 13.5 @ 1504 through 15.5 @ 1726.
New Source -NRA Handloading 1981:
13.5gr Dup 4759 @ 1400
Note:   NRA Handloading 1981 suggests 1.5gr increase; Question again about delta in “DUP” brand.

IMR 4895:  13.5-15.5 (1275-1470) – based off of Hodgdon book (T/C 23" so added 75fps).  No ref to 4895 in manuals available.
New Source -Cartridges of the World:
165gr bullet:
24gr 4895 @ 1430 (175gr bullet)
Note:   Suggests huge delta - countered by other manuals and sources

Best Regards,
John
