Reloads- 22-10 Maynard Extra Long
Mar 20th, 2014 at 8:00am
Print Post

Is anyone reloading the 22-10 Maynard X L?  I am in need of a reliable (or even unreliable) source for brass for this early case.  Also, interested in receiving "a leg up" on your propellant and primers.  Unique is reported to be a good choice, or so I am led to believe. Anything you have to offer is more than I have presently.

Look for some new made Fiocchi 5.75 Velo Dog ammo and or brass, it is perfect fit for the Maynard XL, Fiocchi new and fired brass needs resizing, bullet size is about .229" diameter.
BACO Usually has brass, and of course RMC will make them to fit your chamber, if your bore is .224" you can partial neck size & seat with Hornet dies.
If .228" bore CH4D is your best bet.

Brass availability: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)
If 22 XL rifle is original it more than likely has a .228 bore, think RCBS makes a limited run mould, NOE has some .228" moulds (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

Loading data for the 22XL has to fit your rifle, chamber and bore, with such a small capacity case a couple tenths of a grain over can be too much, I'd go with 4227 or maybe 2400; Unique can go over very fast in these small capacity cases.

Of course if a Stevens 44 / 44 1/2 you can breech seat with a plugged case or use pusher type seater and only need one or a few cases, bullets will probably require a mould or maybe someone on the site can get you a few to test with.

Good luck with your rifle C.M.M., if I ever find the photo I have of the small 22 cases lined up including the Maynard 22XL I'll post it.

In at least one of his books on the single shot rifles, J.J. Grant gave a couple different powder and bullet combinations he had worked up for the 22 Extra Long.
You might also look at the starting loads listed for the Cooper 22 CCM shown in the Accurate Powders No1 loading manual. Cooper had a separate loading data sheet for the 22 CCM that had load data that wasn't published in the Accurate manual. Cooper might still have it archived.

Thank To Mike and B.P. ---

This is going to be interesting.  I always thought of the Stevens .25's as pencils, but the 22-10 X.L.Maynard is right there also.

I appreciate your coaching and for getting me started.

Buffalo Arms is sold out of cases at the moment but taking back orders.

What do you folks use as shell holders ?  B.A.'s says to go to RCBS for a "special order" holder, but that must be a 6 month wait ? ?

Made a die set and shell adapter for the 310 tool pistol handles while waiting on RCBS.

Check CH4D they list the 22 Maynard XL cartridge dies for the .228 bullet, call Dave and I'm sure you could get them for the .224" diameter bullet if needed, shell holder also listed. I use the Co-Ax press and one set of the shell holder plates fits the 22 M XL cases.

You should be able to get cases from the Rocky Mountain Cartridge company.  I've ordered a number of obsolete Maynard brass from them.  Good quality.  I think Buffalo Arms gets theirs from them.  Might be a bit slow in coming however.

In my quest for information I found this and wanted to pass it along for other .22 C.F. folks such as Stevens .22-15 shooter, as well as we Maynard folks.

  Hi Jon and B.P.  -
Glad you found the "linked" article as interesting and useful as I did.  I thanked the author on behalf of the three of us.

Actually, I have had no past experience with the .22 C.F. cartridges which were introduced to our sport during it's hay day by J.Stevens and Mass. Arms. et. al.

The two books published by Grant are a good resource on some of these .22 Central Fire cartridges used by J.Stevens and Mass Arms.

Don't lay it on so thick Webb. I know very little. I've just been able to help you with your Maynard issues. I know a few people who know so much more that I do and I ask questions.

Grant's load was 4.6 grains of 4759 with a 45 grain bullet from a .22 WCF mould, Remington #6 1/2 primer.    (Page 127 of More Single Shot Rifles.)  He claimed  1 1/2 inch groups at 100 from a Maynard.
