paper patch question...

I have some ppb to try, and I'm a little confused about things.  The bullets are a bit larger than the bore, that is the lands cut into them if I push one through.  The rifle is a .43 Spanish which I'm told is actually a 44-77 (.439 vs .446, and the ppb are .439).
From what I've read, the usual bullet for pp'ing tends to fall through the bore without the patch, and the ones I have are plenty tight- easy enough to get one through though.
I thought I'd ask if this seems right?  What suggestions are there for paper?  Seems like they don't need to bump up very much, and I don't have the right tools to measure the odd number of lands and grooves so I can't tell how much the lands cut into the bullet I pushed through.  I guess as long as they end up at .446 they should be ok?

I can usually, but not always, push them through the bore with some effort.  In my humble opinion it's best if the rifling engraves the paper slightly when test fitting by pushing it through the bore.   I expect yours will work just fine.

Wrapped = 0.000 to 0.002 over bore diameter
A good read ... (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

You are on the right track, but here are a couple of things to consider.  First of all, the first round might fit tightly, but the second may not load all due to fouling right in front of the chamber (because a paper patch bullet slips farther up into the bore before being touched off).  You might get around this by wiping between shots.  Its all about your intention.  You should be able to slide a patched bullet through the bore up until near the end of the barrel, where the choke might cause it to stop.  Bump ups, per say, are not a problem.  Failure to chamber, is a more common problem, because even small resistance can tear a patch and cause flyers.

If you are shooting Grease-groove diameter PPBs you should be pushing them with white powder otherwise you will never get them to group  Wink

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

Luckily my rifle doesn't know that...  70grs of BP with a bore-dia. smooth bullet patched to groove dia. shoots nice, ragged holes.

Rek,

If you are a hunter, you will want a couple of thousands clearance between the bore and PP bullet diameter.  This allows for a follow-up shot to chamber
'dirty'.

But if you are target shooting, gunlaker has it right.  A snug fit when chambering the round in a clean bore is what it takes for accurate target shooting.  Wipe between shots with two damp patches, works for me.

Now the above information is based on BP loading, not smokeless powder loads.

Keep on hav'n fun
