Does anyone know if Lyman made different length sight staffs ( the shaft that holds the aperture ) for the Lyman #103 tang sight?
Thanks

Had to, due to differences in mounting position on the wrist relative to bore-line.

They are stamped on the bottom of the base with a code that indicates what they fit. Base would be different and the height of the stem would also have to vary according to what gun it fits.

You can encounter a couple variants of the Lyman 103 elevation staff, stem, and elevation barrel.
The top of the barrel may have a smooth cone, or a straight cut top and is retained by a radiused and finely knurled nut.
If you are trying to obtain a different height stem, make sure you know which variant you have.

The length of the barrel was always proportionate to the length of the stem, as with the #1 & 2.  Too bad stems of the latter don't interchange with the 103.  The cone shape of the barrel's top was the original design--a 1914 Lyman catalog I have has the "new" 103 described in a separate flyer laid between the pages.

The Lyman Sights Catalog No. 18 illustrates the 103 cocking piece sight (early 103 version with cone topped elevation barrel) for the 1903 Govt. 06, and Krag rifles.
Then lower on the same page, the later 103 version with the knurled nut is illustrated for the Savage 19.
The early version 103 appears to share similiar fabrication of the elevation parts with the 101 and 102 Range Control sight.

Speechless and stupefied.  Yes, that "S" always commands some premium, but this...fantastic!  And any Winchester base fits an '85 tang, though the stem height may be different than the S code sight.

Ballards may be weaker,
but they sure are neater!

I see the 103 Lymans go around $450-$550 quite often, so those prices don't surprise me. The $800 price is a big surprise though!

Well, being several decades out of touch, I didn't realize this, & was under the impression that about $300 was average.

I've got a 103 marked WS--the standard code for Winchester.  Just have to figure out a good way to make that "W" go away!

Unertl 10X scopes that have sold for $600-$650 all day long have recently (last week) gone for $700 to $850 on eBay.

... might be time to sell my duplicates & triplicates off ... Wink

Then again, went to a gun show in NH last SAT and a 'collector' had 9 Unertl, Litshert, and Lyman scopes, most 10-15x, and they were none LESS than $900! A 20x had $1400 on the tag!

None looked anything extra special to me ...

All of my single shots shoot one tiny ragged hole with cast bullets ... it's just the following shots that tend to open up my groups Wink ...

Like to know how many he SOLD at those prices.  Anyone seeing those prices, & owning one of those models, will probably jump to the conclusion that his, too, is worth the same--this is the fuel that drives price spirals.

I am going to order a CPA #52  in 32-40 and 22lr this coming weekend and last weekend I was able to pick-up a Lyman 103. The base has been cut and redrilled with a 1.5" hole spacing. I think the mod was done by Lyman as the original marking of DA was overstamped with SB in the exact size font. The price was $250 and the condition is fantastic.  I am just wondering if I am going to have enough height. From what I have been able to find out it doesn't look like I can find a taller staff for more verticle movement. If I have to I can make a spacer block to fit under the base but until I get the rifle I will have to wait. I am 63 and I really don't like waiting being the "Old Fart" that I am.
Thanks for all the above input.
