Remington .22 Rolling Block Sight question
Mar 5th, 2014 at 1:36pm
Print Post
Hello SS fans,
I just received a Remington .22 from a Gunbroker auction. It has the standard rear elevator sight, as well as what I take to be an add-on rear vernier sight. The vernier has no manufacturer's name or number on it, but looks period to the rest of the rifle. Supposedly, this is a #2? that has been redone. The barrel and frame serial numbers match [14417]. The Front Sight is dovetailed and has a small blade pinned in place. The refinish is nicely done, but without having any of my ordered books on hand, I have no idea what year this was made, what its options consist of, or what it originally looked like. I am wondering what sights will fit the vernier's mounting holes, and if anyone has a correct front sight blade that I can buy on-line? any and all info is greatly appreciated! THANKS blindeye for the instructions on how to post multiple pics to the size limit Wink
Thanks...Kerry

No reason to think it originally had any options.  Few buyers of #2s bothered even to equip them with tang sights.  Remington front sights are plentiful, but finding an original #2 tang sight will be a lifetime's challenge, unless one of the sight dealers (like Ken Bean)just happens to have one.  Therefore, better to "get used" to the one you have.

I think I'll need to measure the C-C of the tang sights (maybe they were standardized?) and see if I can get a new tang sight to fit. If not, I'll have to find some plug screws and plug the holes. These eyes aren't ever going to work with this sight.

Problem isn't the hole spacing--that's standard Remington spacing; it's the curvature of the upper tang, which requires a base shaped to match.  Mounting a scope would side-step this difficulty.

I'll have a look at the base on the vernier and see how it was made. I don't remember a gap on it. I could install a different stem on the base. If nothing else, I'll just use the ladder rear and plink with it after I plug the holes.
My Unertl will stay busy on the 44 & 1/2. I hate D&T'ing an original octagon barrel. Mr. Bean is on Empty, but has agreed to look at the front and rear and see what he can do. Thanks!

Indeed it is a #2. That tang sight looks like a quality sight but not made by Remington....

its hard to tell but the sight base looks to have a bit of a curve in it, either made, or altered, to fit the curve of the #2's tang.

#2's are really nice little guns.  The Marcot "sporting roller" gun-porn book has a nice section on the #2s.
Over the years a custom sight builder or two have made limited numbers of replica Rem short and midrange sight for them  I'd love to find a set of DSTs styled like the Rem "roller" DSTs to fit on one of mine.
I have a bucket-list dream to make one into a scaled down Long Range or Creedmoor rifle

Looks thicker in middle than at ends...so maybe filed or ground.  Whole thing looks shop-made.

The tang sight looks a lot like one that is on the Stevens 44 that I just got. I went through Strobel's books and could not find it under Stevens. Found the same sight under Winchester. Did some more looking at my old Stevens catalog's and found the same sight there in an early catalog, 1898 as I recall. Seemed odd to me that Stevens and Winchester had the same sight. No name on mine either.

Sure don't see anything like it in the '88 or '01 Stevens catalogs.  The thick-base sights used by Win. & Marlin are absolutely identical, except for base length, & were made by BGI, or some other outside contractor; these sights, however, are beautifully finished, & bear no resemblance to the one we're talking about, except that they all have thick bases.

Can you provide photo of one on your 44?

I'd like to see a picture of the tang area with the sight on it. It appears there's only one screw holding it down, or the spacing is too close to be the standard 1.90" spacing of a Remington.

Marlinguy,
The two tang holes are ~1.935" center-to-center. I took the vernier off to see if I can find anything close to it at the local gun shows when I walk around, and I used the ladder sight on the barrel. The ladder worked just fine, although I doubt it is original, since it is a Marbles. MVA tells me they have a new tang base that fits, but the C-C spacing is 1.940. Close enough for government work, I hope. I have no idea if the threads are 10-32 or the 10-28 that MVA provides. I do have the screws that were holding the vernier onto the tang, so I guess I could use them to hold a new MVA on. I have an old Lyman Beech combination sight that would look good on the Remington. Once I dig it out and see if the dovetails are the same, I may try it out. I feel like I did when I got my first M-1 Garand, too many options and too many people sticking who-knows-what on the gun over the last 100 years. I am just happy it looks nice and shoots decent. It has a much nicer trigger than my 44 & 1/2.  Is a Rolling Block trigger normally easy to get light and smooth? It isn't a 52 Winchester, but it is nice and crisp.
Thanks!
Kerry

Kerry,

You and MVA can split the difference in the screw spacing measurements and be correct.
My old Marbles tang sight screw chart shows that your No 2 should use a 32 TPI rounded thread (not Whitworth or V).
