I have a Remington RB 20ga. to rebarrel. Was set on going 50-110, but alas, no dies anywhere, not even 50 Alaskan. I have 45-70 dies. Should I just go 45-90 and get over it? I want to load and shoot blackpowder substitute loads, like pyrodex or 777.

Unless you are shooting BPTR long-range (800/900/1000yd), can't imagine why you would want more than the 45-70.

Buffalo Arms has 50 Alaskan dies in stock. Grafs has 50-110 brass in stock. The big stuff is getting hard to find but it is out there.

Nessmuk, I'll send you a PM also. I have two .50-110 rolling blocks and would like to sell one. It was barreled by Ron Snover with a 36" x 1 1/4" green mountain barrel. It is a commercial rolling block shotgun action. It's got original wood on it, but really is a good start to building a rolling block, not a completed project. I have both .50-110 and .50 Alaskan dies, so would throw in the .50-110 dies with the rifle. dave

I recently opted for the 45-90. Reason being, can shoot any bullet as is. Don't need a stepped bullet to increase powder capacity. I'm much more cool now that I own a 45-90. Joe.

When the long-range shooters build their go to caliber is 45-90 there is plenty to get out to 1000 yards accurately. Buffalo hunters found 45-70 and 50-70 perfectly adequate for American large game few stepped up for the big 50s in favor of something they could shoot with less fatigue / pain. The only reason to go beyond 45-90 that I can think of is an extremely high T count. Back off on the jell a little. 40 Rod

The 50-90/110 requires the hammer nose be cut the allow the cartridge to chamber. Make the gun ugly IMHO. Saw one of them this weekend at the show in Tucson. It was built on some sort of a carbine action with a round barrel and a cobbled up combination sight, probably a 9lb gun. Front sight was mounted backward, was really rough and I am fairly certain in was not a Remington. Guy walking around with it claimed he had fired it, said the recoil was mild with BA loads... Wanted $900! I would not have bought it for $200 to salvage the action. SS

If your rifle is not in 7.62 and you can't hit what you are aiming at with de-linked machinegun ammo you are a pretender.

I have both but in a sharps. The 50/90 brass is more expensive than the .45/90. You can also stretch 45/70 brass I believe. I've had a .50/90 since 1979. I sent my 50 back to Shiloh for a heavier barrel I'm getting older and can't shoot like in the old days. My 45/90 will shoot 5 rds in one ragged hole at 100 yards.

I've had two Sharps in 50-90 but both are now gone. Both had #2 barrels and weighed close to 15lbs. The first was a conversion of a Shiloh 1863 to cartridge and shot well enough but I disliked the looseness of the shiloh action. The second a C. Sharps 1874. I made the mistake of fitting it with a tang sight that wacked me often enough I was convinced to sell. In the future I may get another 15lb C. Sharps but it is at this point a low priority. My 50-70 roller (approx 10-11lb gun) does a good job on bison at reasonable hunting distances and is a good bit more portable for stalking. Should anyone be interested I do have this one for sale...
