Use of florial foam wads

Print Post
Greetings,

This is a breech seating question. When pre-charging cases with powder before heading to the range I understand that some use florial foam wads to seal off the powder charge so as not to take chance of spill or contamination. I assume that the florial foam is cut into sheets or strips and the strip pressed down on the mouth of the charged case to make the wad and seal. All fine and good if this is the way it is done. However how thick should I cut the sheets of florial foam? Does the use of florial foam wads appear to have any effect on accuracy, or fouling, and so on. I'm sure that this has been covered before but I've never tried the florial foam wads. I can see the advantage of their use in some environments where setting up a powder measure may not be advantagious, and so on.

Would like to hear what you in the know have to say about this subject.

                                thanks, Sendaro

I tried it once, using the very fine stuff which is intended for use in water, and it worked fine though when I shook a case to see how well it held the powder and spherical shot buffer it didn't stay in so well.  Can't say about accuracy because I ended up just using a wad over the black powder and shot buffer after that (I tried it both ways and chose the wad over the foam).  I just cut a piece of foam the right thickness and pushed it down on the case and trimmed it if it was too tall.
I liked it and thought it was neat, just chose the 1/16th" veggie wad because it cleaned the bore a little on the way out and I wasn't concerned about it coming out of the case unexpectedly.

I stay away from all plastic in my loading period. I use either cork or wool felt. I have shot thousands of rounds over the years and neither has ever hurt my chamber or barrel.

I prefer the dry floral foam and I cut it 1/4 inch thick. When replinishing I always take a piece about a 1/4 inch square place it on the tip of a tooth pick and ignite it. If it very quickly turns to ash you are good to go, if turns into a goo throw it away and go back to shopping. Where one places it makes a differance and not all rifles like it in the same place so it's trial and error. If by chance it likes it off the powder leave it at the mouth of the case until you are ready to use them as they will end up on the powder during the trip to the range. This assuming you are talking about pre-charged cases. Make a wad seating tool the proper length once established and set all the wads just prior to your shooting session.
