.25-25 Stevens dies
Feb 19th, 2014 at 9:19pm
Print Post
Just bought a 44 in .25-25 Stevens. I have .25-21 Stevens dies. The .25-25 is about 1/2" longer as I recall. Can I use the .25-21 dies? Will be using the ammo in only one gun. Could probably get by with neck sizing. Hate to have to order a new die set but will gladly do so if that's what it takes.

Yes 25-21 dies will work OK. I have used 25-21 dies with out a problem. I used 25-35 dies to neck size and seat before I bought a 25-21.
Cases are the hard part, I used turned brass (Ballard I think) and it works fine just not cheap.
Also if a neck splits you can cut them down to 25-21 for a second life.

Nominal base diam of .25-21 is .300, .25-25 is .323

Thus, using a .25-21 die will over work the brass a bit.

But lacking an alternative.........

Yes, if you full length resize, but you can set the dies higher to not full length resize and they work fine. I use my .25-21 dies on my .25-25 dies this way.

Thank you gentleman. I think this was covered before but I had since forgotten. RCBS was the only dies I have been able to find so far. Around $175 plus shipping.  Now if I can just find my .25-21 dies and bullets that I know I have somewhere.

I have an old nickled No. 3 Ideal dbl. adj. marked .25-21-25.  I use this one for bullet seating my .25-25.

The beauty of these old single shot straight cartridges is that you really do not need fancy dies at all. If the shell will enter the chamber, that's really all you need.

A decapper-recapper is necessary, but that is about all.  Especially if you breech-seat.

An Ideal tool for almost any of the small calibers will do for seating primers.  A universal decapping die for a 310 tool will take care of the decapping.

I just measured a bunch of 25-25 and 25-21 and they all measure about .300 at the base. That .323 figure for 25-25 is from "Cartridges of the World" and is incorrect.

Well, since I've sold all my .25-25 brass I can't dispute you.  About 10-15 years ago I was hoping to use some NOS .25-25 that I found at a gun show for my .25-21, but discovered that it would not go in after trimming one to length, so I've always believed that Barnes was right.  So it goes.

I have one UMC 25/21 case marked UMC, the head is .301, it's been fired and reloaded, I had to measure it with caliper just below the rim and I have one 25/25 in my collection that measures .2993 at the head, it's a NOS factory loaded and it is marked DWR, does anyone know what cartridge manufactor that would be?

I found my .25-20 Single shot dies but can't seem to find the .25-21 dies that I thought I had. If I can't find them and decide to buy one set of dies for both the .25-21 and .25-25, which would be the best? .25-21 or .25-25?

I would say the 25/21 dies, as they would be able to size both necks.

If you want specific dies for the .25-25 for under $100 look at CH4D. They are always available, and should be around $65-$90 depending on caliber. Buffalo Arms has them.

That's what my .25-20 Single Shot are and I am positive I have the .25-21 somewhere. Found a post here from 2011 that I said I had them and was discussing this same topic. Was looking for the rifle back then. Am I the only one who can't seem to find things that you know you have? Still looking and my buddy who does my reloading for me also is looking. He found my .38-55 dies at least. Found the .25-21 gun and brass so they have to be somewhere. Quickest way to find them is to buy a new set but that is a last resort.
