I've inherited a Stevens 44.5 in 218 Mashburn Bee. Is anyone familiar with this caliber? Can anyone share some loading information?  Huh

Bob,
This data is out of a PO Ackley book, no barrel length given:

45 gr
16 gr 4227, 3242
16.3 gr, 4227, 3319

50 gr
17.3 gr, 4198, 3300

55 gr
16.5 gr 4198, 3005
16,75 gr, 4198, 3063
17.1 gr, 4198. 3068
17.3 gr, 4198, 3316

I'm sure that you know to start a little low with Ackley data.

Thank you Frank,

Yeah, I'm not sure about P. O. Ackley's data either; I doubt that 16.3 grains of 4227 will fit in a Mashburn Bee case.  Undecided

I have one built on a Cadet martini action, I haven't fired it in many years. It performed best with 2400. I'll look in my old notes for the loads.

Well, well.   My favorite varmint cartridge.  I used 2400, and got good results, but never even near what P.O. Ackley reccomended.  I bought a M 1892 Winchester rifle, and with it a box of re-loads that had been done by the gunsmith who built the rifle.  He told me these were Ackley loads.  They were so hot, they were pounding the ejector back in the breech block.  The other one was a new 1894 Marlin with a McMillan 24 inch barrel.  Worked great with loads about 15% lower than Ackley's.  I still have that rifle, which says something about it.  It is easy to get 100 fps higher velocities than a K-Hornet, but with mild pressures.   Grin

Capacity is identical to the .22 R2 Lovell, so Lovell loads will work.  4198 was a favorite in the Lovell.   In my Lovells I tend to use Lil'Gun for middling (30Kpsi) loads and 1680 for full-house (45Kpsi).

My best load so far has been 10.5 grains of H110 with a 45 grain Sierra bullet, which seems to be mild. I have found it to be very sensitive to pressure, there may only be 1 grain between a mild load and a load that shows signs of excess pressure. I think it would be very easy to over load it.  Tongue

I have recently bought a 92  Winchester re-barreled in what is inbetween a Mashburn and a regular 218 Bee. I had to make brass out of 25-20's ,  to neck down with a false shoulder , to hold brass back from stretching at the head , as when I first tried it with Win 218 factory ammo, it was leaving a bad shiny head area where it was thinning on fireforming.
I put on a Lee Shaver front , and Seoul Tang aperture sights and will it ever shoot well.
The bad rap given to lever guns for bad accuracy is because of limitations of buckhorn and blade sight picture.
What a neat little cartridge it is chambered for. I think it is a Gibson Bee , with much sharper shoulder being the main "improvement " , the shoulder is not blown forward as much as a Mashburn Bee
So far I am just loading to the relatively mild Bee data of 12.5 4227 and jacketed 40 &45 gr bullets , with good results for fire forming
