Breech seat 40/70 ST

I have a High Wall with a Badger barrel I am considering trying Breechseating as I am not having much luck with fixed ammo. Groove dia .409 1x16. This is Accurate Mold design. Does it look as if it would work?

It should work well. It would fit a little better if you could get him to make the front band .001 larger and the rear .001 smaller.

That's a version of a Ron Long tapered bullet. I'll be using it in my 40-50SS with a .408 16 twist Bartlein barrel breach seated. Tom at Accurate make me a mould for it in aluminum. It casts great bullets.

Another option would be to go with the original Ron Long tapered spitzer. Hoch built me this mould. I cast a 100 bullets with it over the weekend and couldn't be happier. The only issue is I waited about 4 months to get it.

OK...
This thread has given me an opportunity to ask a stupid question; but since I don't know for sure, I'm asking.
When using these tapered bullets and breech seating, is a throat necessary or does the taper allow the bullet to be forced into the rifling ahead of a normal chamber ??
I own a Stevens 44 in 28-30 that appears to have a throat ahead of the chamber.
But I don't think that feature is factory; and I never got good accuracy out of it with fixed ammo and the standard 28-30 bullet.
Never tried breech seating because I wasn't sure if I needed a tapered bullet or if this throat would allow a standard Ideal 28-30 bullet to work.

Hi peep,

I only shoot breach seated in my 441/2 CPA. The two bullets I've used are tapered and dual diameter or bore rider bullets. You can feel the difference seating between the two. The dual diameter bullet can't be seated with a plugged case so I use a seater. You have to push a lot harder compared to the tapered bullet. The tapered seats easily with hardly any pressure. Both are equally accurate with the edge going to tapered for me.

If your chamber is throated CPA has a .28 cal tapered mould that would probable work for you. Speak to Gail or Paul for advice.

I should probably make a chamber cast, so I know exactly what things look like.
