Best Trapdoor Book

Are several out there, but am wondering which is the best from a technical standpoint? Am not interested in a 'coffee table' book, if can be avoided. Something more on the lines of Campbell's High Wall book would be great. A book that includes info/pic's on Gemmer/Hawken variations would be especially nice. BigOtto's post on his TD conversation reminded me that I need to get started on my own.

Thanks. Think I'm going to have to spring for the 'non-fancy' $75 book.

Al Frasca's books are very detailed in all aspects of the Springfield rifle. Al is a great guy to deal with and gladly shares his knowledge. Good luck!.

Plan to build a sporter TD very similar to Private Terry's 4th prize TD shown below from Al's website. Only difference is am thinking will go with a new half-octagon barrel rather than a full round.

Is the above photo the original Terry rifle, or a reproduction?  ( I think that gun pictured is in my safe!) I bought it a few years ago from a collector/dealer that painstakingly recreated every detail of the original Marksman's Rifle.

Believe it is the original. Does yours have this grip-cap? Post a pic of yours and let us see. One beautiful rifle and well worth copying.

Did find the book in new condition for $45 and free shipping, which was nice. Only difference between the "Terry rifle" and the one I want built is a half-octagon barrel.

Mine is definitely NOT the original, but it's dead nuts on for the gun in the first pic.  I'll take some pics later.

Wouldn't you know................ bought an 1877 TD rifle today at my local gun-shop consignment, but is so nice that I can't bring myself to break it apart for my Gemmer-Trapdoor build. Original finish is in the 90% range with excellent bore/wood/cartouches. Ended up giving Al Frasca a call to purchase a complete action, since I'm going to put on a new half-octagon barrel & wood. Very nice gentleman to deal with.

Al is also a great person to buy a trapdoor from.  I bought an 1884 "shooter" rifle from him that had a perfect bore and was a greaT-looking piece as well. For a ridiculously low price, I thought.  The thing is a tack-driver.

Are any stock makers offering a marksman or officer model stock blank like the one in the photo ???

Graduated Peep: Treebone might have what you are seeking.

I suggest giving him a call:

George Petersen | 575-376-2145 | 8am-6pm MST

Web page: (You need to Login or Register to view media files and links)

As an aside, he does offer a "sporting" style stock:

Thanks for the link. Nice looking stock blanks.
I've heard of Treebone, but have never dealt with him.
I should see if he can also replicate stocks from customer patterns.

That's a nice looking rifle. Thanks for posting the Treebone links. My gunsmith was going to build up a stock pattern using bondo, etc., as we neither knew about the Treebone stock. We agreed that the Treebone is the way to go. No reason to re-invent the wheel. Here's a pic of John King's TD to compare to PFC Terry's, posted above.

Ordered a stock from Treebone for the Gemmer-Hawken TD build. He said it was the last one he had in stock  that was configured the way I wanted (shotgun butt, pistol grip and Schnabel forearm tip). Also received the Hawken DSTs from Track of the Wolf and the barrel from GM shipped yesterday, so should have everything in-hand shortly. Just a bunch of metal & wood work away from a new rifle.
