32-40 Black powder
Jan 5th, 2014 at 3:44am
Print Post
I want to start shooting the 32-40's with black powder. I will be  shooting paper up to 200 yards. Any suggestions on bullets.

I shoot larger calibres in black powder, but have never tried with the smaller ones.

Are wads, cookies or something along those lines needed. Just hoping to get a starting point and go from there.

Thanks

Fixed, I load 40gr FFF, set a card wad or a Walters wad on the powder. Don't size my brass, just drop the bullet on the powder. I use tapered bullets as long as the twist allows. Have had best accuracy with bullets that fit the unsized case necks very close.

If you want to breech seat bullets, compressing the powder will eliminate separated cases. I made a tool to compress BP to the end of the case mouth. An air gap from the base of the bullet to the powder is okay. Maybe 30gr compressed powder works better than 40?

Some wipe between shots and some use a blow tube.  I blow = Joeblow, ha ha, so funny.

  Good luck.

Joe, how much compression do you use in order to prevent stretching and eventual separation?  I've got a really nice load going for my CPA in .38-55 but it does eventually stretch the brass a bit and I have lost a few cases.

I'm using about 0.080" compression if I remember correctly.  I have read Steve Garbe's article on breech seating and case stretching.  I haven't tried a wad to take up space between the over powder wad and bullet yet but I likely will.  If I can't make that work I'll try annealing and then maybe RMC everlasting cases if it comes to that.

To the original poster,  with my .32-40 barrel on the CPA I've had pretty good results with the Saeco 200gr tapered bullet in 20:1 and a .030" veg wad.  Hopefully others with more experience than I do will have other suggestions.

Not sure how much compression, GL.  Was about five years ago. The tool is a die and plunger that is used at the bench when using one case. Thinking maybe 3/16 to a 1/4 inch compression.  Powder charge is compressed with just enough room left to seat a Walters wad or cork wad and be flush with the case mouth. Have had better luck with fixed ammo for offhand shooting.
