And the Palma Trophy itself remains missing.  Incredible that such an impressive & expensive artwork could simply disappear.

The Palma Trophy didn't disappear. It is in storage. It has been  since the advent of WWII. And as soon a Congress gets the budget figured out. They will find the Trophy.

Seriously?  Had always read about its disappearance as an unexplained mystery.  The fate of countless silver trophies has been the melting pot, but this one is so extraordinary that even a precious metals dealer should have brains enough to realize it was worth more intact.  This consideration wouldn't apply if had been stolen, & the thief wished to dispose of the incriminating evidence as quickly as possible.

Great read. Thanks for posting.

According to these references the original was lost and what remains is a recreation of the original.

There is some additional mystery surrounding these matches as they were the last at which the original Palma Trophy was seen. The massive trophy, as tall as the center on a National Basketball Association team, was known to be hanging outside of the office of the Secretary of War during the 1930s. At this point in history it vanishes as completely as gun smoke on a windy day.

Extensive searches conducted by the National Rifle Association, in cooperation with the old War Department, its successor agency, the Department of Defense, and the Smithsonian Institution, have failed to turn up any clue as to its location or even its existence. There is some speculation, put forth by fans of the Indiana Jones movie trilogy, that it was crated up and lies stored, and uninventoried, next to the Ark Of The Covenant in a huge and dusty secret government warehouse in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland, perhaps on the fringes of the presidential retreat at Camp David. Considering that the time frame of the movie and the last known date of the location of the trophy coincide, this romantic theory is as plausible as any. The trophy's disappearance closed the early epoch of the Palma Match.

The trophy was at first named The Grand Centennial Trophy in honour of the Centennial celebration of the Independence of the United States of America. It was commissioned from Tiffany’s for about $1500. It stood 7 1/2 feet tall made of bronze, silver and gold inlay. On the banner was engraved “In The Name of The United States of America To The Riflemen Of The World.” Above the banner was the word “PALMA” which in Latin means palm tree and to the Romans signified victory or the ultimate in excellence. Unfortunately the original trophy has not been seen since 1954. Who took it I wonder?? I can only imagine how much it is worth now. A new one was made again by Tiffany’s from the old blue prints for a bit more. $32,500. It is worth several times that now.

As recently as '54?  That makes its disappearance all the more incredible.

With NRA headquarters right there in the District of Corruption, what sense did it make to hand it over to the War Dept., where it would have been inaccessible for public viewing?  Seems to be a case of stupidities piled upon stupidities.
