Trail Boss?
Dec 30th, 2013 at 7:58am
Print Post
Hi all,
Does anyone have any first-hand experience with Trail boss powder?
I was thinking of using it in some small capacity cases for plinking loads.
But, I have heard that it may give high pressure spikes.
Can anyone shed some light on this stuff?
Thanks,
Dave

Not if you stick strictly to the recommended loads for whatever you're shooting, as you would (or should) with Bullseye. I shot a good bit in a 44-40, but got better accuracy with heavier loads of other powders.

have you simply 'googled" it,  might lead you to discussions on some of the other on-line shooting Forums.  I tried to see if there was an on-line archive of Handloader Magazine to see.  I think I've seen a tech review of it there.   But WolfePub is a subscription-only site--(why am I not surprised) -or buy the back issue CD---which may or may not be topic/subject searchable

The only experience I have using trail boss is for subsonic loads for my .308 Win bolt rifle. 10gr with a 175SMK will shoot moa at 100yds from my rifle.

I'm with Colo-native, tried it and still have 1/2 can left. After looking over the pressure data it seemed to be more of "developed for marketing" product that only seems to have an advantage in very small cases and light loads (for those who worry about double charging). Why not just use titegroup and cautious reloading?

Ditto.   But I'm waiting for spring before I pour any on the cabbage patch.

I load Trail Boss in .45 Colt with a 250 gr flat nose copper plated lead bullet from Berry Bullets. Works very well.

Prefer Trail Boss in the .45 Colt as I once came close to double charging. With Trail Boss, the powder will overflow the .45 Colt case if it is double charged.

'Nevva' loaded Trail Boss in other calibres.

I have used in a couple of my .45-70's.  It shot ok at 100m, but vertical dispersion was rediculous at 200m.

It's an excellent powder for shooting close range at tin cans Smiley

I have some pressure test data for Trail Boss in .45-70 somewhere.  It had absurd pressures, high 30,000's for velocities in the 1000 fps range.  Made me not interested in using it for any straight wall case.

If I did use it, I'd use it in strict conformance with good published test data INCLUDING pressures.  The inconsistencies and high pressures I've heard of make me very wary of experimenting with it.

I shoot Cowboy Action competition. I use TB in all my "cowboy" guns....38-40, 44-40, 45Colt and Cowboy45 Special. Fantastic powder for these 850fps +/- loads using cast bullets.

I tried it in my 45-70, 38-55 and 32 Special with very poor accuracy under cast bullets. Unique just can't be beat for mild accurate loads in these cases

Thanks for the responses.
Here's what I'm loading for, maybe it will help you help me....
.46RF Long (made from shortened 303 British)
.25-10 Halsted (made from .22 Hornet, basically a .25 Hornet)
.32 Long (made from .32 S&W Long)
.38-1.75 (made from 30-30 Winchester)
All are cast action Ballards.
Unique works and good ole black works, but I keep hearing about how good TrailBoss is.
Maybe I need to stop listening to stories  Smiley.
Thanks again,
Dave

I've used it in various applications with no problems. If you go to Hodgdon's website you will find specific info and data.

If you decide to try TB. Don't use in a cast steel action of old...  To much at stake....
