Boomers Bullet Moulds

Schuetzen shooters have been investigating where to find a Schuetzen bullet mould now that Paul Jones and David Mos no longer manufacture moulds.

Leo Bumphrey indicated he can custom build bullet moulds similar to those previously manufactured.
He has samples of my .323 235 grain Paul Jones bullet I use in the 11.5:1 RKS barrrel.
Leo indicated he can also custom build spitzer bullets in addition to the black powder bullet moulds he already manufactures.

I have been very happy with a .40 caliber Money mould I had custom built by Leo.
It drops bullets extremely well and I get no feathering in the vent lines.
No side movement of the blocks when they lock.
It also produces nice sharp edged square bases.
And he sells them at a decent price.
Leo says he can make .25 to .50 caliber moulds.

These look like worth a try...is it expensive to ship something like a mold from Canada to the U.S.?

Leo charges $100 for the mold plus $25 shipping and handling.

Many people use the R&J Mould locking handles with the Boomer molds. Or the traditional Saeco style handles.

Tested my 410 grain Boomer Money bullet in my new .40-65 1874 Shiloh Sharps.

5 shot groups are averaging 1.2 inches at 100 yards with Swiss FFFg.

More attention to calling the wind and it should shoot under 1 inch.

I have corresponded by email with Leo about a new adjustable PP mould over the last week or so, he has been very helpful and truly flexible on what you can order.
I will certainly order one as soon as I get my mind made up on just what I want, maybe to many choices.

Hey Dave;
Stretch it out to 200 or 300 yd to see what it does and a little more load data.
Interested.

I only have a hundred yards to shoot in the winter.

After the snow drifts disappear I can get at the 200 and 300 yards; so  you will have to wait till spring for me to do the final rifle tuning.

Load data:

.40-65 Starline Cases
410 grain Boomer Money bullet with .410 bands
Alberta Schuetzen Lube
Remington 9 1/2 Magnum Primers
Newspaper Wad over primer pocket
Drop Tubed Swiss FFFg after weighing
49.7 grains is barrel's powder sweet spot (49.8 grains is good too but other loads open up)
.060 Vegetable Wad over black powder
Compressed powder .168"
Shiloh Sharps IN-Line Seater - (zero runout on 90% of cases and only 1/2 thousand runout on 10 % of cases)
- leaves .002" bell flare on case which centers case in chamber.

The front bullet band centers bullet in the rifling and all the grease grooves are inside the case. Only front band is outside of the case and it is engraved by the rifling when chambered.

My 1874 Shiloh Sharps has no throat - the rifling comes back to mouth of the case. That is why I have a maximum diameter of .398" on the Money nose.
.400 diameter noses will not chamber in my rifle by hand.

Schuetzendave Do you know anyone shooting the Boomers Custom Nose form/design, only thing I can find out about it is that it does seem to resist nose slump better than the Money nose, reason I ask is am planning to use up a lot of known 30:1 alloy I have in my 40/70SS BP rifle with a PP bullet mould from Leo and wanted to stay away from the nose slumping with the soft alloy!
Thanks for your help, Mike

Mike:

I do not know who is using Leo's custom nose.
Give Leo a call and he might be able to link you to someone using that nose.

I use 20:1 lead:tin alloy and always make sure I have NO antimony in my mix.

This is better than four yrs old but thought I'd revive it to ask how he does on making a mold that drops a round bullet, also, how he does on hitting the nail on the head on size for the alloy?

Thought about giving him a try on recreating an old Ideal Postell scaled down in size some from the 535gr.

Best Regards,
John
