How do you set head space on a 44  22rf. Off cartridge or off barrel?.......Larry

Are you setting up your action so that the block seats hard against the barrel, or slightly off of the barrel to contact just the cartridge rim?

Fit the barrel so the block comes up square and tight to the barrel shank. Remove the barrel and chamber to zero rim head to block clearance. Beware the crush type head space. Nothing is gained in accuracy. It can be a liability. Loan the gun to someone, they may slap the action shut which can easily cause a slam fire.

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought I would headspace the block. Good point about the tight headspace and out of battery firing .  What sort of clearance should I leave ? I made up a dummy to check the squareness of block and mockup of tennon.......tks. Larry  Smiley

When chambering I use a straight edge and an unfired empty case to check clearance. Set the case head flush with the face of the barrel.
It's okay to set the breech block to barrel face just a bit tight. After a bazzilon rounds, everything will loosen from wear on the pins. Grease the pins during final assembly.

Agree that snug contact is OK, but I wouldn't overdo it.
I've seen some set up that have contact so tight, it's like working a tie-down binder on a Semi-truck flat-bed load. Don't want excessive force to cause premature wear on all the linkage contact points.

Measure from front of reciever ring to breechface with a depth mike. This measurement should be the same as length of barrel tenon plus go gauge minus .003 for crush when barrel is screwed on. If go gague is flush with end of barrel then length of barrel tenon will set headspace correctly. Be sure breechblock is held firmly to rear when measuring.

I should answer my own question. Slight load on breach block?

You want zero clearance between the breech block and barrel face. You want it tight enough so the lever snaps up tight when it goes over center on closing. When I say "crush", I'm talking about leaving the case head proud so the breech block crushes the rim when closing. You don't want that.
