Closest I know of could be the 38-55.

With a parent case from the 45-70, the 38-56 has a nominal length of 2.10", so not that, either. 38-70 and 38-72 are both considerably longer than 2.25".

My guess is that is is the .38-50 Remington Hepburn. Is it on a Hepburn rifle?

Could be. Nominal on the 38-50 is 2.195" these days, so 2.25" would be a good fit.

Cartridges of the World list the 38-50 Rem. Hepburn as 2.23 inches long.  Pretty darn near 2 1/4.

Yes Ken, It's a Hepburn that's chambered for this round. Dale.

Several folks are reporting excellent results shooting the 38-50 in both BPCR silhouettes and BPTR shooting with heavier bullets and faster twists. Unlike the misnamed 38-55 (should be the 38-45), the 38-50 has no problem holding 50gr+ of powder.

Thanks to all who replied to my question. Will take it as the 38-50 Hepburn. Dale.
