Are you sure its an R2 the stamping only says 22-3000. They are 2 different chamberings. The story was that when Risley made the first reamer for the 22-3000 for Hervey Lovell he thought the shoulder wasn’t sharp enough so Risley made 2 reamers one the way Lovell designed it and one the way he thought it should be. When Lovell came to pick up the reamer he was offered to take either Lovell said he wanted it the way he designed it. So Risley kept the second and used it to chamber the R2 or the second reamer. Turned out that Risley was right but there are varminters both ways 22-3000 and 22-3000 R2.

Charlie,
After what 40_Rod has said, a Chamber cast is your next thing to try. A small bar of Cerrosafe is your next buy. Try Brownells, they usually have it in stock. Just Google the Brownell name and you should get their website without any problem.

Here are a couple new pictures.  Jerry Johnson told me it was relined and
chanbered for 22-3000 R2 in 1938.  There is a descrepancy the work
order says serial # is 7547 mine is 7347 at quick glance the 3 looks like a
5.  Also barrel is 26" not 28"  Anyway I will do a chamber cast before
buying dies.  The bore has no flaws that I can see.  The assembly # for the
barrel and action match so if it was shortened it was cut off the muzzle.  I
had a question the liner is 3/8" at the muzzle and 1/2" at the breech.   Was
the liner 2 diameters  or did he bore and bush the breech before chambering?
It is nice that some of these old rifles still exist and did not get torn apart for
something else.   Charlie

Cheatin_charlie, I once bought a CC Johnson 22-3000
on a Sharps Borchardt. The original barrel was used and relined. On close inspection I could see .45 Caliber rifling at the Muzzle. Could it have a good Bore? So I disassembled it and heated it up on a stove. When I saw the Solder bleeding I took it down the celler and drove the liner out. Bah! it was smooth. On close examination I found it still showed rifling. One liner inside another, reheated it and drove that one out. Ran brush thru the Bore and it had bright, shiny, sharp rifling. Ended up restoring it. BUT, one thing I had to do was sleeve the chamber as Johnson had reamed it out to create a large head on the sleeves for strength in the mild steel Sharps barrel. Sleeved the chamber back to 45-70 and shot it quite succesfully for many years. Still have it to this day as it was my first really good Single Shot. So the diameter difference is most likely a large chamber slug.

Gentleman when looking for Cerrosafe you can buy a pound from Rotometals for 15.99, it's listed with the bullet alloy and Brownells wants 24.99 for a half pound, their smallest portion and 45.99 for a pound. If you throw in some alloy and or some tin or lead to get the purchase to 99.00 you can take advantage of their free shipping.

Nice Rifle Charlie and it is clearly stamped R2 so you might not need to do the chamber cast.

I took the action apart last night and will a chamber cast anyway since I
have cerrosafe in the basement.  I will have all winter to get it ready to
shoot.  Before I buy dies I need to talk to somebody on how to form the
cases.  I will do that in the reloading section of the forum.

My sincere apologies for the wind-up. I only looked at the first photo I see in another photo a second stamp that clearly shows the R2 designation. Oh well at least you learned a little about the cartridges history.

Dumb question but doesn't anyone use sulfur for chamber casting anymore?
Not the most fun and touchy but pretty easy to get from the local garden store.

desert-dude, one of the functions of Cerro Bend that I like is that it is not messy, and if you should get it somewhere in the action that locks it up you can melt it out with a hair dryer. Only needs 158 Deg. F to melt. Aaaand, afterwards you can throw it in a bag or box and reuse it as many times as you wish. It is also more accurate in reproducing the cavity you cast it into. It does initially shrink but if you give it an overnight it goes thru a series of shrink and swell cycles and ends as an accurate reproduction of the cavity. I used it for many years to evaluate precision Lens cavity shapes. HTH Regards, FITZ. Smiley

Follow Desert's question. Read about, but never tried Sulfur. Is there a difference in Cerro Bend and Cerro Safe? Both low temp alloys and may be the same, just based on use.

chuckster, you are right Cerro safe is the same as Cerro Bend. There are at least a half a dozen materials listed that have the same characteristics. Low melt temperature, 158 Deg F and easy removal from cavity due to initial shrinkage. But with time they all cycle thru a number of shrink and swell cycles and end up right at whatever the part was cast into. Regards, FITZ. Smiley

I used sulphur only once, in 1985. That was enough for me. I did it inside and stunk the house up but, what was worse, it was on fire, inside the chamber! I believe it was on fire when I poured it, it's very hard to see the fire.

We used to use burning sulphur to fumigate the chickenhouse.  The sulfur dioxide killed all of the mites and ticks and anybody else.  My advice is dont.  Us poor boys in Texas use wheelweights instead of Cerrosafe.  Same proceedure, measure 20-30 minutes after pouring.  Almost as accurate as Cerrosafe and tells you what you need to know and you can afford to keep the casting for future reference.
