Finally found a Maynard

I thought I would share a few pics of the 1882 Maynard I found a couple of weeks ago at a gunshow. At first glance it looked too good to be true. In 20 years of local shows, I have only seen one display of Maynards and they were sooo far out of reach. This one is in .35-30 and the bore is as pretty as the outside.

That's certainly a unique Maynard. Very nice rifle and a good addition to any collection. It was obviously a special order or possibly an aftermarket modification. A factory gun would probably have the serial number stamped into the stock under the lower tang, but not being numbered would not rule it out. I've seen them with patch boxes before and they all seem to be different.

No number under the tang. The inletting looks to be done mostly by machine(maybe a morticing bit) with a little hand fitting. It's not as exact as a factory Winchester or Stevens. The nickel makes it seem like a match, but who knows?

I started a thread in reloading, so any help there would be great.

  Hug-A-Bean ---

Do you like Jim's green label or his black?

That is a wonderful find on your part, and proves the fact that persistence does pay off.  In this case for you, an exceptional Maynard.

So, welcome to the "club" and happy shooting.

Thanks for the welcome CMM. This is a great bunch of people. I was on vacation in Virginia in the spring and sent out a PM to a couple of fellas I thought might be close to my location. As a result, Boats sent me an invitation to join in for a single shot Ram Bash. Set me up with a rifle, ammo and a wonderful welcome. I had a ball. Didn't do so well in the match, but met some great guys.

Back on topic, I love the single shots and the Maynard was an unexpected find.

   Hi Ed --

Thanks for your account of meeting Boats (Bill D.) while you were down visiting in Virginia.  Bill is a personal friend and I had the pleasure of shooting with him in Maryland this past April.

Should you have future visits to this area planned, (I live near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and lived in Fairfax, Virginia while working in D.C.), please let us know.  Also, now that you have a Maynard to make your life that much more enjoyable, do introduce yourself to John Bly, if you haven't already done so.  John lives near Winchester, Virginia and is my "go to" expert on anything Maynard.  A more knowledgeable Maynard expert and historian you will not find.

  Ed--
I was interested in knowing if you have confirmed the origin of your unique butt stock on the Maynard rifle.  Do you have an opinion on whether the stock was a factory option selected by the original owner?  Or, do you believe that the original factory stock was replaced later by a private gunsmith?

The Maynards which I own have the serial numbers impressed into the wood along the mortise for the lower tang piece.  I assume you have at some point removed the stock from the your breech piece.

Also Ed, is the bright metal polished steel or is it actually plated nickel (or some other silver colored alloy) ?

Hi CMM
I don't believe the buttstock was an original Maynard factory part. There was no number under the tang and from what I have read about Maynards this installation would not meet their meticulous standards. It is well matched to the gun and fairly well fitted, but I doubt original factory.

I think the finish on the frame is old nickel and likely factory. Everything about it except the stock looks much like new and well preserved. The tang sight and it's detent in the frame show almost no use. The bore and chamber look excellent with no signs of wear or corrosion.

Other than a collection of several Maynards I saw at another show a few years ago and the .40 cal. that ron has, I have never seen another one. But based on my history with Winchesters and Stevens that I have been able to find, this one may be the closest I have to how they were when new. I could be wrong, maybe it is a good refinish, but that's what I see so far.

Ed

Does Mr. Bly belong and post here?

All of my single shots shoot one tiny ragged hole with cast bullets ... it's just the following shots that tend to open up my groups Wink ...
