folding rear sights

I need a rear sight for this rifle. I was thinking of enlarging the dovetail to get rid of the notches or covering them with the new sight, and putting in a folding two or three leaf type. Sarco has some but I was hoping to find some with a little more quality. Any ideas where I might find some?

Looks like a muzzle-loader, right?
Do just you want a good functional folding leaf rear sight or are looking to find one that is "correct" for the rest of the rifle?
Is this going to be a target rifle or a hunting rifle?

Here is a picture. I am looking for something to not only to hide the dents on both sides of the dovetail but that will help upgrade the rifle a little. It is a fine little R/B that once I clean it up, give it a freshening of the checkering, remove the varnish and apply a nice oil finish to the flame birch stock. I think it will be a nice addition to my collection.

I was thinking about something along this line without the base, but I am open to other ideas.

Oh!  Folding leaf sights?  Those are expensive.  Good luck finding any you can install yourself.

What an intriguing looking dovetail! It almost appears that the two "dents" are actually recesses for a leaf spring like the Spencer barrel sight, but I don't recall seeing a Remington, or any other rifle for that matter, with that kind of sight. A conundrum...

VERY interesting don;t remember seeing a roller with a keyed-on forend before.  Looks very custom and nicely done to boot.  Just looked in Marcot's sporting roller book. (every time  get that book out I get lost for an hour or two) There are a couple custom rifles with forearms keyed on with single wedges.   Most are from western gunsmiths Gove appears to have been partial to them and Hawken-looking stocks.   I have looked carefully at all the sights illustrated and I see nothing like that.  He mentions a special sight developed fo the Cadet 7 /American Boy Scout #4s but do not show a detailed picture or description.  An inquiry with photo addressed to Dick Binger might possibly be informative.

You might see if you can modify the base of that quarter-rib sight to something like shown in the following pictures that will fit your existing dovetail

Check Track of the Wolf. They have a pretty good selection of   vintage style sights.

Check Brownell's, they have express type sights although I don't remember off hand who made them. You can also check Midway USA. Any sight you get will have to be regulated for each leaf with your load.

I think the express sights are made by New England Arms or New England Mfg or something like that.  you might also check the muzzle-loading supply sites.

There are sights available like what you want, just hard to find.  Jeffs Outfitters has one that could be adapted to work, I have one of them and it's not bad, but it's not excellent:

NECG  (newenglandcustomgun.com) has one that's better, I installed one of these in a mauser rib by cutting  a long dovetail, and another on a big bore dangerous game rifle by making a custom base.  This sight is well made and it is excellent:

The NECG sight is a Recknagel, good traditional german quality.

Best of luck!

thats the sight that SteveD put on my 40-70SS   Earle/Wesson express-rifle project.   I have an original Beach (that needs a new large ivory bead) for the front.

The gun companies in Scandinavia (ie Gustav, Husky, Haugan etc) made a lot of sporting rolling block rifles with keyed and pinned forends.  A Birch stock is very consistent with that location of manufacture. Many of them also have two and three leaf rear barrel sights.  They use a much shorter dovetail than the NECG. However functional, from a traditional viewpoint, I don't find them as attractive.
As for the American Bay Scout Rifle sight, it is a ladder with slider configuration so not in keeping with what you want to do even if you could find one.

That was my first thought when I saw the original post. This Roller was Scandinavian, and maybe the OP is too! (svartkrutt sounds Norwegian) I own a Type 33A Husqvarna with a full length forestock that has two keys holding it on.

Well I am not Scandinavian but I do specialize in Scandinavian arms and svartkrutt means "black powder" in Norwegian. So you can consider yourselves pretty good detectives.
Here is a picture of some of my others, as you can see I do like the odd stuff.
