Where can I buy 400 grain cast bullets for a 40-65

I would like to  try a variety of cast 400 grain bullets in my 40-65 Highwall.  I want to buy good cast bullets rather than buy molds and cast them myself.  I can start casting again later once I decide which bullet I like.  I would appreciate your recommendations as to sources of supply.

Vol717,

I've got the following, which are excellent for .40-65.

SOLD1 Box (50 ea) of SAECO #740, 407 grains, 20:1 alloy, SPG lube.  They are 1.314" long with .411" driving bands and .396" nose diameter.

1 Box (50 ea) of RCBS 40-400, 407 grains, 20:1 alloy, SPG lube.  They are 1.306" long with .411" driving bands and .400" nose diameter.

These are individually packed in foam trays.  I'll ship them to you for $50 total or $25/box (PayPal, USPS money order, personal check, cash).  If you're interested send a PM & I'll respond with my address.  BTW, Buffalo arms gets around $29 + shipping (around $5/box) for similar bullets.

Do you have the facilities to cast now?  I have several moulds that you could borrow.

What diameters do you need?

Moulds that I have run in two ranges - the larger ones .411 or so work well in the .405 Win, I've heard that smaller works better in the .40-65.

Please advise.

Those 400gr Snover bullets on BACo look pretty nice. I have their 400gr 'Money' bullet if you want to try it. Same deal that Wayne offered. The Saeco 740 has won many a match over the years. Even a national championship or three.

I'd like to try a box of the SAECO #740. The mold is hard to find lately but I plan to keep looking. Meantime, it would be nice to know if it's worth the wait. PM forthcoming.

vol717,

The box of SAECO #740 bullets are sold.  I still have the box of SPG lubed RCBS 40-400 if you are interested.

march41,

The Meister Cast bullets you suggested may be great for smokeless loads since they are hard cast and lubed with Meister's standard hard lube, but I'd not recommend them for black powder (BP) shooters which typically need softer alloy bullets and softer lube.  Hence the reason that bullets for BP shooters are usually shipped in Styrofoam or plastic bullet boxes with each bullet separated for protection, adding to the manufacturing cost/price.  Since the Meister bullets are much harder and lubed with a hard lube, hundreds can be dumped in a box and shipped without appreciable damage.

Meister did offer some bullets lubed with soft lube (I believe it was SPG but not sure) for BP shooters at one time but discontinued sales due to the extra handling and shipping precautions necessary.  Now all their bullets are lube with the same hard blue lube.

The post did not state smokless or black.I shoot about 200+rds a week of 40/65 bullets and find them quite accurate out to 500m with smokeless, also another shooter uses them with black with great results. He also bought them unlubed and used spg and saw no difference in groups from their lube. Also if one shoot a lot $137.00 shipped per 500 is a bit less $250.00 unshipped for 500.Also 30 to 1 was thought to be best, then 20to1 now 16to1? it comes down  to what works for you is best. Thanks Bob.

Bob,

I agree, if you can get them unlubed and then use a suitable black powder lube, they may work very well.  I'm seriously considering using wheel weight alloy in my BP rifles once I run out of the pure lead I currently have.  I know some guys have been very successful using harder alloys.  I believe the key is the bullet diameter must match the throat & groove dia. real close or, better yet, be slightly larger because they will not obturate as well as the lead/tin alloys.  If I do try wheel weight alloy I plan on adding some tin to the mix.  The antimony and other stuff in wheel weights is not "friendly" to BP loading/shooting.

I'm running low on lead myself and just today use my last pound of tin. I have maybe 75 pounds of wheel weights and likewise Isotope lead but don't know if there's antimony in it or not. I may have to resort to one of the other when the lead's gone.
