stevens favorite lever falls

A common fault with Stevens Favorite 1915 is when you bring the gun to full cock the lever drops down.  I am sure that this is because something must be worn or bent.  Which part is it?  Is it an easy fix?

It is probably a worn link or worn link pins.  These parts can be replaced or repaired.  On one that I have that was just slightly loose, I made the repair by setting the barrel back about .005".  It fixed the problem very well.

Thanks, I have seen this problem on 3 of 5 favorites I've looked at.  It mus be a very common fault.

Several issues regarding these models.

Takedone screw/barrel notch, get worn and causes the barrel to move forward.

Breech bolt screw, gets worn or bent, replace with new heat treated screw.

Lever screw gets worn or bent, replace with new heat treated screw.

Link pins, are soft and get worn or bent, as they are .152" diameter, they can be reamed out and fit new 5/32" hardened pins.

Link is soft and can get worn, streched, I have even seen a few cracked ones by one of the pin holes, make a new link from tool/alloy steel and heat treat it.

Once the screws and link pins have been replaced then look at the barrel breech face gap and set back the barrel to correct headspace issues.

Hope this helps.

Does anyone keep these various pins & screws on the shelf as stock items?  Ditto for the equivalent 44/44-1/2 parts.  Making them up one at a time is not the efficient way to go about it.

Wisners has springs and screws, but not pins. Note, the front of the site says IF IT ISNT LISTED THEY DONT SELL IT! I guess people ask a lot.

I have heard of people replacing the pins with either drill stock rod, or actually cutting off the ends of round drill bits with a dremel.

The reason the lever drops is as people said, the pins or linkage wear and stretch causing a looseness between the barrel and the breach face.

On my stevens, I have a knurled nut that I can use to adjust the headspace with that keeps this from happening. However, most Favorites don't have this nut.

Good luck!

Wasn't that knurled ring only on the 1894 model? Mine has that feature. Must have dropped it to save manufacturing costs. The Favorite is one of my, well, favorites among boy's rifles.

Yes, '94s only; a good idea, but evidently used only a short time, probably for the reason you suggested.

I recently acquired a 1915 Favorite.  The lever literally dropped when the lever was released, no tension at all.  I disassembled it, and made some new pins.  I had read some posts about that being a possible cause of a loose block. In my case, the new pins totally cured the problem.  My pins were about .005" undersized where the block and lever wore grooves.  After the new pins it locks tight.  Thanks to all of you that offered cures for this issue!  Now for that bore re-lining this one needs.

Have you shot your 1915 after the repairs?

Even with a 'pitted' or 'rough' bore if it has rifling visible full length, it may shoot well anyway, and it would save you some money for shooting.

I have several rifles with less than pristine bores that shoot with acceptable accuracy. The Favorite is a boys rifle for plinking and hunting, not a target rifle. It may be "good enough". Shoot it with some different brands of ammo to see just what you have in terms of accuracy.

"Jack First" had the parts I needed, but first they require to have a copy of their catalogs to look up the diagram and part list and the item so you and they are communicating on an equal knowledge basis.

There once was a company called Idaho's Cutting Edge that made screws and possibly other parts for old rifles. I bought several pairs of the hammer and lever pin assembly for model 44 Stevens from them. I don't know if they are still around. If no one else knows I'll try to find contact information for them.

Yesterday I received a Stevens Favorite 1894 series barrel in .32 Long RF that has the knurled nut on it.  The bore looks either leaded or nearly shot to smooth but there is still a 'ghost' of the rifling showing, I have not tried to clean it yet.  The exterior is dark brown oxide covered muzzle to the Tenon but the Tenon itself is grey metal.

I found it on Ebay a few days ago.
